Behind the Design: Our Construction & Process
Architecture is about solving physical problems, not just drawing lines. We are on-site from the first sketch to the final brick to ensure what we design is exactly what we build.
We're working on a major retrofit of a 15,000 sq ft residential project in Noida. The client bought the property with an existing structure, and our task is to add a new floor and completely transform the layout to fit their vision.
This video shows the transformation of a drawing room on site. We removed walls and relocated a staircase to create a grand, open space with a double-height ceiling and a connection to an outdoor courtyard.
For this renovation, we created a grand, 25-foot-high double-height entrance by cutting out an existing slab. This dramatic change completely redefines the sense of arrival and connects the entrance directly to an internal courtyard.
On-site, explaining the design for this internal courtyard. We're using raw stone and a cascade fountain to bring an outdoor feeling inside. The space will also have a retractable roof, making it a flexible, open-to-sky area.
Here, we're walking through the drawing room of a project under construction. We planned a double-height space with a 22-foot tall stone feature wall, a glass curtain window overlooking a fountain, and warm veneer paneling.
This video explains the complex renovation of a 10,000 sq ft home. We transformed the layout, introduced a double-height drawing room, added a new floor by strengthening the existing structure, and integrated modern amenities throughout.
For this bungalow, we used a rat-trap brick bond. This technique creates a wall cavity, providing excellent thermal insulation to protect the home from the south sun, making it a sustainable and passive design choice.
Jamming is a detail we use to create a clean transition between different materials on the inside and outside of a window frame. Here, we used quartz internally and Gwalior stone externally for a neoclassical home.
We use flush skirting with a groove to create a clean, maintenance-free detail. This avoids dust accumulation and the groove allows for the natural expansion and contraction of different materials like stone and plaster, preventing cracks.
We use ply backing in curtain trenches and at chandelier bases for structural support. This ensures a solid surface for fixing, distributes the load evenly, and guarantees long-term durability for heavy curtains and light fixtures.
About Behind the Design: From Blueprint to Reality
We do not just design; we solve structural challenges. Whether it is cutting a concrete slab to create a double-height foyer or using rat-trap brick bonds to manage heat, every detail here exists for a functional reason. You are seeing the result of hundreds of on-site decisions made to ensure your home stands the test of time, rather than just looking good on paper.
How We Approach a Build
For us, a project does not end when the 3D renders are approved. That is when the real work begins. We view architecture as a process of continuous problem-solving, where we are actively managing site constraints and material realities.
Why Our Details Matter
We often get asked about the specific techniques we use. These aren't just aesthetic choices; they are calculated decisions based on physics and longevity:
- Thermal Control: In our recent bungalow projects, we utilized rat-trap brick bonds. By arranging bricks vertically with a gap, we create a cavity that provides insulation against the harsh sun, naturally cooling the home.
- Material Transitions: We use 'jamming' to create a clean visual break between different materials, such as quartz on the inside and Gwalior stone on the outside of a window frame. This keeps the interior aesthetic consistent regardless of the exterior requirements.
- Long-term Maintenance: We prioritize flush skirting with a groove. Traditional skirting collects dust and creates ledges. Our approach is flush to the wall, and the groove allows for natural expansion and contraction of the stone, which prevents cracks from forming over time.
The Reality of Retrofits
Renovating a home in Noida is different from building from scratch. We have handled projects where we had to strengthen existing columns to support a new floor or tear down slabs to introduce double-height living spaces. It requires precision and an understanding of the existing structure that you only get by being there every single day. If you are looking for architects who care as much about the plumbing shafts as they do about the facade, we are the right team.
Axiom Design Studio
We are Aishwarya and Kunal. We started Axiom because we wanted to be the ones on-site, ensuring our designs don't get lost in translation. If you want architects who actually care about how your home is built, let's talk.
