Understanding the Science of Your Scalp
Hair fall isn't just a surface issue; it’s a reflection of what is happening inside your scalp. I help you decode your growth cycle and porosity so you can stop guessing and start healing.
To solve hair problems, we must first understand the scalp. This is the foundation of my Hair Growth 101 training, where we explore the scientific principles governing hair health, starting with the growth cycle itself.
The Anagen or 'Growth' phase is when your hair is actively growing, and it can last for years. This infographic explains how 80-90% of your hair is in this phase and needs key nutrients like protein, zinc, and B vitamins to thrive.
The Catagen or 'Transition' phase is a short period where the hair follicle shrinks and growth stops. As this diagram shows, this phase is often triggered by internal factors like stress or crash diets, highlighting the link between lifestyle and hair health.
During the Telogen or 'Resting' phase, which lasts about 3 months, hairs naturally prepare to fall out. This infographic explains how factors like monsoon weather, stress, or low iron can push more hair into this phase, leading to increased shedding.
The Exogen or 'Shedding' phase is when the hair finally falls out. While some shedding is normal, this diagram explains that if you're losing more than usual, it's a sign to check your blood levels and overall scalp health.
If you want stronger hair, the goal is to feed your follicles and extend the Anagen (growth) phase. Understanding your scalp's cycle is the first step to knowing what it needs to stay healthy and productive.
Do you know your hair's porosity? This simple illustration shows the three main types: low, medium, and high. Understanding your hair's ability to absorb and retain moisture is the key to choosing the right products and treatments.
If you have low porosity hair, it means moisture struggles to penetrate the hair cuticle. This infographic explains why lightweight products are necessary and how using gentle heat can help open the cuticle to lock in hydration.
High porosity hair absorbs moisture easily but loses it just as quickly, often leading to dryness and frizz. For this hair type, I recommend using heavier creams or oils to seal the cuticle and lock in that much-needed moisture.
This diagram shows the fundamental connection I teach: everything starts from within. A healthy mind and gut lead to a healthy scalp, which is the only sustainable path to healthy hair. It's a journey of patience and consistency.
About The Science of Your Scalp
Many people try to fix hair fall with surface-level products, but the issue is usually hidden within your scalp's growth cycle—the Anagen, Catagen, or Telogen phases. If you do not understand which phase your hair is in, you are likely using the wrong treatments for your specific needs. My approach looks at your diet, stress, and lifestyle because your scalp is a direct reflection of your internal wellness. When we get to the root of that imbalance, the growth usually follows naturally.
Why Your Scalp is the Blueprint
Your hair is just the end result. If you are dealing with thinning or breakage, the 'why' is almost always happening on the scalp. My goal is to teach you the science so you can stop wasting money on products that don't match your hair's unique requirements.
The Science of Growth Cycles
- Anagen (Growth): 80-90% of your hair should be here. If this phase is short, your hair won't grow long.
- Catagen (Transition): A short 2-3 week period where growth stops.
- Telogen (Resting): Hairs prepare to shed. Stress or nutritional gaps can push too many hairs into this phase at once, leading to sudden hair fall.
Do You Know Your Porosity?
This is the biggest mistake I see in my salon. Porosity is your hair’s ability to absorb and hold moisture.
- Low Porosity: Your hair cuticles are tight. Moisture sits on top. You need lightweight, plant-based products and gentle heat to help hydration penetrate.
- High Porosity: Your cuticles are open. Moisture enters easily but escapes just as fast. You need heavier creams or oils to lock that hydration in.
Understanding this saves you time and prevents damage. Whether you are dealing with PCOD-related thinning, post-pregnancy changes, or just want to maintain your hair health, it starts with a proper diagnosis. I don't just sell products; I help you build a ritual that actually works for your biology.
The Hair Kitchen
I'm Ritu, and I started The Hair Kitchen right in my own home because I was tired of chemical-heavy fixes that didn't work. I don't just look at your hair strands; I look at your lifestyle and internal health to understand what is happening at the root. My goal is to teach you how to heal your scalp so your hair can finally grow the way it is meant to.
