Understand Your Hair: The Science Behind a Healthy Scalp
Your hair is constantly communicating with you. If you are experiencing thinning, shedding, or persistent dryness, it is likely a cry for help from your scalp. Let's decode the science of your hair growth and fix the issue from the root.
Many people think their hair is the problem, but I always say, "It's not your hair, it's your scalp." A healthy scalp is the foundation for everything.
If your hair is falling, it's often because your scalp is stressed, clogged with product buildup, or inflamed. This irritation disrupts the healthy growth cycle.
Your roots could be gasping for air under layers of DIY concoctions and cheap shampoos. This buildup suffocates your hair follicles, making them weak and prone to shedding.
Scalp issues often start deeper. Your gut health, stress levels, and hormones are all connected, and any imbalance shows up directly on your scalp and hair.
The solution is simple: treat your scalp right, and your hair will follow. Nurturing your scalp is the first and most important step towards stronger, shinier hair.
If you're struggling with hair fall, it's important to understand the science. Your hair goes through four phases: Anagen, Catagen, Telogen, and Exogen. Knowing your phase helps us find the root cause.
The Anagen or "Growth" phase lasts 2-6 years, and 80-90% of your hair is in this phase. It needs nutrients like protein, zinc, and B vitamins to thrive.
The Catagen or "Transition" phase lasts 2-3 weeks. The follicle shrinks and growth stops. This can often be triggered by stress or crash diets.
The Telogen or "Resting" phase lasts about 3 months, where hairs naturally fall out. Factors like monsoon, stress, or low iron can push more hair into this phase, causing increased shedding.
The Exogen or "Shedding" phase is when the hair finally falls out. If you're losing more hair than usual, it's a sign to check your blood levels and overall scalp health.
About Understand Your Hair: The Science Behind a Healthy Scalp
A generic shampoo bottle will not fix a hormonal imbalance or a clogged follicle. When you come in for a diagnostic session, we stop guessing and start measuring. Using digital trichoscopy, I examine your actual follicle density and sebum levels, then correlate that data with your recent blood reports and lifestyle factors. You walk away with a scientific roadmap to recovery, not just a random product recommendation.
Why Your Scalp Matters More Than Your Hair
Most people focus on the hair shaft, but that is just the dead part of the structure. The living part is your scalp. If your scalp is inflamed, clogged with product buildup, or struggling with poor circulation, your hair simply cannot grow properly.
Decoding Your Hair Growth Cycle
Understanding what is happening on your head is the first step to fixing it. Your hair goes through four distinct phases, and knowing where your strands are currently stuck is key:
- Anagen (Growth): 80-90% of your hair should be here. If this phase is short, you will struggle with length retention.
- Catagen (Transition): A short 2-3 week phase where growth stops.
- Telogen (Resting): Hairs rest here for about 3 months. High stress or vitamin deficiencies can prematurely force too many hairs into this phase.
- Exogen (Shedding): The final exit. When this happens in excess, it is a clear sign to check your blood levels, specifically Ferritin, B12, and Thyroid markers.
My Diagnostic Approach
Whether you join me for a virtual consultation or visit my Khar West studio, the process is the same. We do not do one-size-fits-all. We look at your diet, your sleep quality, and the water hardness in your area. If you are dealing with PCOD, postpartum hair loss, or damage from chemical treatments, we address the internal triggers.
We use digital tools to magnify your scalp, allowing us to see exactly what is blocking your follicles. From there, we design a customized ritual—blending Ayurvedic wisdom with modern science—to balance your scalp's microbiome. It is about sustainable healing, not quick fixes.
The Hair Kitchen
I am Ritu, and I believe your hair is a reflection of what is happening inside you. I started The Hair Kitchen to move beyond chemical fixes and really listen to what your scalp needs, whether it is managing hormonal hair loss or just fixing a persistent itch.
