Additional Architectural Design Concepts and Site Studies

bySandesh ArchitectsTakes projects in BengaluruView full gallery

A collection of design explorations and conceptual projects. These studies focus on challenging terrains, creative spatial organization, and raw material application.

A conceptual design for a farmhouse built into a rocky, sloped terrain. The structure is designed in layers, with a pool and deck on the mid-level to take advantage of the expansive views.

A 3D model of a residence designed for a steeply sloped plot in Kotagiri. The house is split into multiple levels that follow the natural contour of the land.

A 3D cross-section of an unbuilt project called "Folded Planes." The design features open, glass-walled living spaces and a large mid-level terrace garden.

A design option for the "Shifting Planes" project, showing two adjacent homes designed with a unified architectural language of concrete and glass.

A top-down view of the "Mr. Anil's Residence" concept, showing how a central water body and skylight bring light and nature into the core of the 40x40 home.

An interior render for the "Serpentine" project. The design features a floating staircase and a continuous bench seat, creating a clean and minimalist living space.

An interior view of the "Box House" concept, showing an open-plan living and dining area with large glass walls opening to the outside.

About this collection

Every conceptual project I undertake requires a deep study of site topography and light paths. Whether you are dealing with a steep gradient in the hills or a challenging urban plot, my process centers on structural integrity and the flow of space rather than just visual trends.

Architecture is often about solving problems hidden in the terrain. This collection of work includes unbuilt schemes and conceptual explorations that highlight my approach to complex sites. When I approach a project like the residence in Kotagiri, the design is dictated by the slope. The building must follow the contours of the land, not fight them. By layering levels and orienting the structure towards the valley, I ensure that the architecture feels natural and anchored.

For urban plots, the challenges are different but equally rigorous. Concepts like 'Folded Planes' or the compact 40x40 residences are about maximizing utility within a footprint. I use tools like structural 3D visualization and precise site analysis to determine the wind path and daylight optimization early in the process.

My design process for these concepts remains the same as my built work. It begins with site analysis, followed by multiple iterations to find the right balance between raw materials like exposed concrete, steel, and glass, and the functional needs of the inhabitants. This gallery illustrates that process: constant iteration until the site and the vision align.
