Coastal Critters Photography
The shoreline is buzzing with life that most people walk right past. I love the challenge of finding and capturing these tiny, mighty creatures in their natural habitat.
This tiny Purple Shore Crab was one of the biggest challenges I’ve ever faced. Capturing a subject this small with my huge 600mm lens required so much patience and careful positioning. I’m incredibly proud of this shot because it represents the dedication I bring to every project.
Here is another look at the tiny Purple Shore Crab, with its striking blue claws on display. The way the light catches the wet rocks and the crab's shell creates a beautiful, sparkling effect. It’s amazing to see so much detail and attitude in such a small creature.
About Coastal Critters
Capturing a subject as small as a Purple Shore Crab with a 600mm telephoto lens is a technical puzzle that forces me to be incredibly deliberate with my positioning. Instead of relying on a standard macro lens, I use long-distance compression to isolate these tiny creatures against the wet rocks, allowing me to observe them without ever encroaching on their space.
Why I focus on the small stuff
Big animals often steal the spotlight, but the shoreline is full of tiny, complex dramas. From the way a fiddler crab moves across the mud to the intricate patterns on a shore insect, there is a whole ecosystem under our feet. I enjoy finding these stories, waiting for the light to hit just right, and documenting behavior that is usually missed by the untrained eye.
My technical approach
Photography on a muddy, uneven shoreline requires patience and specific gear management. Using a Sony a7 IV with a 200-600mm lens allows me to maintain a respectful distance from shy subjects while still getting intimate, high-resolution details. This is especially important for 'No Touch, No Disturb' ethics. I prioritize natural lighting, often working in the soft glow of early morning or late afternoon to avoid harsh shadows and to capture the true colors of the environment.
Where I work
I focus my nature trails within the wetlands and coastal patches of Thane and Navi Mumbai. These areas are surprisingly rich in biodiversity if you know where to look. Whether it is spotting a monitor lizard on the bank or waiting for a crab to emerge from its burrow, I aim to create environmental portraits that show these creatures exactly where they live.
