Butterflies: Winged Jewels
Butterflies are more than just pretty insects, they are tiny, floating pieces of art. From vibrant, detailed close-ups to playful silhouettes against the sunset, I love capturing their delicate dance in their natural homes.
The contrast here is just stunning. This spotted butterfly, perched on a dry plant against a pitch-black background, looks like a star in the night sky. This dramatic lighting really makes its delicate patterns pop, showing nature's incredible artistry.
Sometimes the best moments happen when you least expect them, and your best camera is the one you have with you. I captured this beautiful butterfly in Bali with just my phone, mesmerized by the way it danced on the flower. It’s a perfect reminder that it’s all about the moment.
I followed this Paper Kite butterfly as it floated through the air like a piece of paper caught in a gentle breeze. Seeing it finally rest on this vibrant green leaf was such a peaceful moment. This is what I mean by authentic wildlife storytelling, capturing creatures as they are, where they live.
Photography for me is not just about documenting, it's about creating art. I love playing with light and shadow to tell a different kind of story. This butterfly silhouette against the bright sky creates a simple, elegant, and mysterious mood that I just find magical.
About Butterflies: Winged Jewels
Butterfly photography is less about chasing and more about waiting. I use a telephoto lens to keep my distance, ensuring I do not disturb their natural rhythm or flight path. Whether we are exploring nature trails in Thane or wetlands in Navi Mumbai, I will help you spot the difference between common sightings and those hidden, camouflaged wings that most people walk right past.
My Approach to Butterfly Photography
Photography for me is about more than just taking a picture. It is about patience, observation, and respect for the subject. Butterflies are incredibly sensitive creatures, and getting a great shot requires blending into their environment. I rarely use tripods for these sessions because I need to move quickly and quietly as the butterflies land or take flight.
The Tele-Macro Advantage
Most people think you need to be inches away to get a good macro shot, but that is rarely true for butterflies. I rely on my Sony FE 200-600mm lens to achieve a tele-macro effect. This allows me to stand back, maintain a comfortable distance for the butterfly, and still capture razor-sharp details of their wings. This technique creates a beautiful, creamy background blur, making the butterfly pop and ensuring the focus stays entirely on the textures and patterns of the insect.
Where We Shoot
My sessions take place across the Mumbai Metropolitan Area. We focus on local nature trails, gardens, and wetlands that are known hotspots for biodiversity. Early mornings are typically our best time, as the butterflies are more active and the light is soft, which helps prevent harsh shadows on their delicate wings. If you want to learn how to spot these 'winged jewels' or simply want a beautiful set of photos of them in their habitat, join me for a session. I am happy to share tips on how to use natural light to capture those dreamy, glowing silhouettes or how to frame them against the lush greenery of our local parks.
