The Science of Yoga & Ayurveda: Understanding Energy & Prana
Yoga is more than just flexibility. It is a structured system to regulate your nervous system and balance your internal energy. Whether you are curious about how Nadis influence your stress levels or how Hatha Yoga impacts your physiology, here is the science behind the practice.
Unlock your body's true power through chakra activation. This video guides you through specific asanas that stimulate each of the seven chakras, from the grounding Utkatasana for the root chakra to the illuminating Sirshasana for the crown.
Hatha Yoga is the science of balance. This graphic illustrates how the practice unites our solar and lunar energies for a complete physical and spiritual transformation.
What is Hatha Yoga? It is the union of "Ha" (Sun or solar energy) and "Tha" (Moon or lunar energy). The practice is designed to balance these two opposing forces within us.
"Ha" represents our solar energy. It is dynamic, heating, and active, linked to the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight), the left brain, and the Pingala Nadi.
"Tha" represents our lunar energy. It is cooling, calming, and restorative, linked to the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest), the right brain, and the Ida Nadi.
When our solar (Ha) and lunar (Tha) energies are balanced, Kundalini energy can awaken, rising through the central channel (Sushumna Nadi) and activating each chakra.
Why does this balance matter? Awakening Kundalini brings mental clarity, emotional stability, high vitality, and a sense of blissful stillness. These are the deeper benefits of Hatha yoga.
Did you know your body has invisible energy highways? They are called Nadis, and they carry your life-force, or Prana. The three main nadis are Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna.
Ida Nadi is the cooling, lunar energy channel. It flows along the left side of the spine, supports intuition and creativity, and is linked to the parasympathetic nervous system.
Pingala Nadi is the active, solar energy channel. It flows along the right side of the spine, supports logic and vitality, and is linked to the sympathetic nervous system.
About The Science of Yoga & Ayurveda
Understanding your energy isn't mystical; it is physiological. Whether you are dealing with burnout or struggling to focus, identifying which of your Nadis (energy channels) is blocked is the first step toward correcting it. I teach this practical, science-backed approach in my Nandini Layout studio, connecting ancient wisdom directly to your modern physiological state.
Bridging Ancient Wisdom and Modern Science
Many people treat yoga as a purely physical exercise. While movement is essential, the true power of yoga lies in how it interacts with your nervous system. In my sessions, we move beyond just asanas to understand the 'why' behind each movement.
We explore the concept of Hatha Yoga not as a specific style, but as a science of balance. 'Ha' represents the solar energy linked to the sympathetic nervous system, while 'Tha' represents lunar energy linked to the parasympathetic system. When we use specific sequences, we are actively managing your cortisol levels and shifting your body from a state of fight-or-flight to rest-and-digest.
The Subtle Body: Prana and Nadis
Your body operates on a network of invisible energy highways called Nadis. We focus on three:
- Ida (Lunar): The cooling channel that supports creativity and calming.
- Pingala (Solar): The active channel that drives logic and physical energy.
- Sushumna (Central): The channel for clarity and stillness.
When these channels are blocked, you might experience brain fog, persistent fatigue, or unexplained restlessness. My approach involves using Pranayama (breathwork) to regulate your Prana—your vital life force. If your breath is erratic, your energy becomes erratic.
Practical Application
Whether you are joining my 200-hour teacher training or a therapeutic session at my studio in Nandini Layout, you will learn to map your own energy. We analyze how different asanas influence your chakras and how Ayurvedic principles of the Three Pillars of Health support your daily routine. This is not about learning theory to pass an exam; it is about learning how to troubleshoot your own physical and mental state when life gets challenging. No fluff, just consistent, science-backed tools for your personal transformation.
