Writing Retreats, Book Clubs, and Our Writer Community
Writing is usually a solo sport, but it does not have to be. From our residential workshops in the Himalayas to our monthly book club, we create spaces where stories find listeners and writers find their tribe.
Join me, Chetan Mahajan, for an immersive creative writing course in the Himalayas. In this residential workshop, you'll learn to write, edit, and pitch your book, all while surrounded by the mountains and a supportive community.

Our Himalayan Reading Retreat is not just about books; it's about connection. Here, a stack of books brought by our attendees meet for the first time, ready to be shared and discussed.
This is the vibe at our reading retreats: cozy, focused, and in good company. Here, a participant gets lost in a book, proving that sometimes the best community is one that lets you be with your thoughts.
We are thrilled to announce the launch of The HWR Writers' Book Club. This is a space for writers to read together, analyze craft, and grow as literary enthusiasts.
For the first edition of our book club, we are reading the international bestseller 'Butter' by Asako Yuzuki. Join us to discuss this thrilling story and what it can teach us about writing.
About Beyond the Draft: Community & Events
You might come for the writing, but you will stay for the connections. Whether it is a quiet afternoon at our Satkhol retreat swapping stories over Kumaoni chai, or debating the craft of a thriller during our Sunday Zoom book club, these are not just events. They are reminders that you are part of something bigger. If you have felt like you are shouting into the void, come join us instead.
Writing in the Himalayas
Our residential retreats in Satkhol are not about fancy resorts or luxury living. They are about 'Elevated Living, Elevated Writing.' We provide a space where you can escape the noise of the city, wake up to mountain views, and finally hear your own voice. You get structure, accountability, and the company of other writers who are also pushing to get their first draft done. We mix serious writing hours with treks, local Kumaoni food, and plenty of informal time to just hang out. It is intensive, it is real, and it works.
The HWR Writers' Book Club
Not everyone can pack their bags and head to the mountains every month. That is why we started the HWR Writers' Book Club. We meet on the last Sunday of every month to dissect a new book—not just as readers, but as writers. We look at the craft, the plot choices, the pacing, and what the author did to make the story stick. It is a way to keep your literary muscles flexed even when you are not actively drafting. Plus, you get to meet and debate with other writers from across the country.
Why We Do It
Every event we run is built on our core belief: you cannot edit a blank page. Whether you are at a retreat or on a Zoom call, the goal is always the same—to get you writing and keep you writing. And because we are a community, your participation goes further than your own project. Proceeds from our programs go to the Chirag School in Uttarakhand. So when you write for yourself, you are helping support education for others. No fluff, no hidden agendas, just writing and community.
