We transform stories into tactile experiences. Our hands-on creative workshops allow children to use art, science, and craft to process their emotions and build lasting confidence.

In a workshop with employees from Amazon, our children in Pune drew their visions of the future. This activity encouraged them to think creatively about technology and AI, and then present their ideas with newfound confidence.

Our two-day workshop with Amazon employees was a journey of learning and imagination. On day one, children built working models of lungs and vacuum cleaners, turning scientific theories into tangible, hands-on experiments.

A young girl proudly displays her bunny craft. After a story session, these activities help children connect with the story's themes on a deeper level, turning abstract ideas like hope and rebirth into something they can hold.

A group of children raise their handmade bunny puppets high. The collective energy and pride in their work is a beautiful sight, showing the power of creating together.

Some stories are told with colors. A child at our Kings of Castle Library drew this beautiful picture of a storytelling session, capturing the memory of the volunteer, the mural, and the library that feels like home.

A volunteer helps a young girl with her princess crown craft at our Secret Garden Library. These one-on-one moments during activities are perfect for building connections and offering encouragement.

A girl proudly wears her handmade crown while holding a pop-up book about princesses. Through these stories and crafts, children see that they too can be the brave and kind heroes of their own tales.

Children gather around a pop-up castle, their eyes wide with wonder. Interactive books and follow-up activities make the stories more tangible and memorable, helping to heal and empower.

About Healing Beyond the Page: Creative Workshops

It is not just about glue and paper; it is about grounding abstract emotions into reality. When a child crafts a 'gratitude hand' after a session, they are not just making a puppet—they are physically holding a promise they have made to themselves. This creates a tangible anchor for the courage they just read about, allowing them to carry the story's lesson out of the library and into their daily lives.

Our approach to creative workshops is built on the S.T.O.R.Y. method, designed to bridge the gap between narrative therapy and self-expression. We believe that once a story unlocks the imagination, the hands must follow to solidify that discovery.

Turning Theory into Touch

Whether we are working in our Imagination Havens in Mumbai, Pune, or Bengaluru, the process remains intentional. We don't just read and leave. We use arts and science to deepen the impact:

  • Science and Innovation: Collaborating with teams from companies like Amazon, we build models of lungs or vacuum cleaners. This helps children see that science is not just a textbook theory but a tool they can manipulate and understand.
  • Expressive Arts: After stories like 'The Lion Who Wanted to Love,' we might ask children to create a promise of kindness. These artifacts—crowns, puppets, or drawings—serve as personal reminders of the values they have chosen to embody.

Why Hands-On Matters

For children facing trauma, verbalizing feelings can be incredibly difficult. Art offers a non-threatening bypass. By focusing on a bunny puppet or a pop-up castle, a child can externalize their internal world without the pressure of direct conversation. This creates a safe 'third space' where they can safely project their fears, hopes, and triumphs.

We provide all materials for these sessions, ensuring that our volunteers—our 'Changemakers'—can facilitate these moments of connection without logistical friction. These workshops are a core component of our annual program, turning library visits into a journey of self-discovery.

We founded Bookwallah because stories were our own escape during difficult times, and we wanted to build that same solace for others. We don't just host sessions; we create spaces where every child feels seen and brave enough to dream, one story—and one craft—at a time.
