Featured Highlights: Bharatanatyam Artistry & Training
A look into the heart of my dance practice, where discipline meets expression. From the rigour of daily sadhana to the vibrant energy of our stage performances, this is what defines our Ambalam family.
This is the culmination of sadhana. My student, Meera Sreenarayanan, in a powerful moment from her "Danike" Varnam performance. Seeing my students command the stage with such energy and grace is the greatest reward of being a Guru.
The foundation of all great dance is built here. This is a glimpse into our Adavu practice, the essential building blocks of Bharatanatyam. We focus on perfecting these fundamentals to ensure every movement is clean, precise, and powerful.
The Guru-Shishya relationship is more than just teaching steps. It is about nurturing an artist. Here I am sharing a quiet moment with my dear student Ambili Krishnan before her performance, a bond that goes beyond the classroom.
Nattuvangam is the heartbeat of a Bharatanatyam performance. Here, you can see my students practicing the intricate rhythmic patterns, learning to connect the dance with its live musical soul. This is an essential skill for any serious dancer.
This is me, lost in the art. A moment of complete surrender during a performance of "Bhakt Jana Vatsale." For me, dance is a conversation with the divine, and I strive to impart this sense of devotion to all my students.
Ambalam is more than a dance school; it is a family. This was our Vijayadashami celebration, a vibrant day filled with art, tradition, and the joy of being together. We believe in celebrating our culture and our community with full hearts.
Art must also serve the community. Through the Ambalam Foundation, we bring music and dance education to children in rural schools, like this session at Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya. It is our responsibility to share our cultural heritage with the next generation.
About this collection
My training process prioritizes the Adavu, the foundational steps that form the grammar of Bharatanatyam. I do not encourage shortcuts. We spend weeks refining your stance, weight distribution, and rhythmic precision before we ever step onto a stage for a full-length piece.
At Ambalam, Bharatanatyam is not just a syllabus; it is a commitment. My approach is rooted in the traditional Guru-Shishya parampara, where learning is intense, personal, and profoundly honest. You will not find quick-fix hobby classes here. Instead, you get a rigorous curriculum that moves from foundational Adavu drills to the Margam, incorporating Carnatic music training provided by my husband, T.V. Ramprasadh.
Understanding the music is as critical as mastering the steps. We place a heavy emphasis on Nattuvangam—the rhythm conducting that serves as the heartbeat of any performance—and Abhinaya, the art of internalizing and expressing emotion. Whether you are a beginner returning to dance or an advanced student preparing for an Arangetram, my goal is to guide you toward becoming a complete artist. We integrate yoga for conditioning, ensuring your body is as prepared as your mind. If you are serious about this journey, I am here to mentor you, help you refine your repertoire, and guide you through the complexities of stagecraft.
