Forget viral hacks and shelf-cluttering products. After 25 years in dermatology, I cut through the noise to tell you what your skin actually needs—and what it doesn't.

The skin barrier is the missing link in many skincare routines. A weak barrier leads to dryness, acne, and sensitivity, causing even the best products to fail. My philosophy is always to repair the barrier first, then treat, to achieve a true glow.

Healthy skin isn't built on products alone. It repairs itself from within, influenced by nutrition, sleep, and hormones. Skincare works best when your body supports it, which is a core part of my treatment philosophy.

What does your skin really need? It's simpler than you think. This graphic outlines the fundamentals: gentle cleansing, barrier-repair moisturizers, daily sunscreen, adequate protein, and proper sleep. These are the pillars of healthy skin.

Many common habits actually damage your skin. Over-exfoliation, using too many actives, skipping moisturizer, and inconsistent sunscreen use all lead to inflammation, breakouts, and dullness. Understanding these is the first step to fixing them.

Your skincare routine might be consistent, but is your skin barrier actually restoring? This is a critical question I ask my patients. If the barrier is compromised, no amount of product will deliver the results you want.

A simple but powerful reminder: good skin isn't instant, it's intentional. This reflects my core belief that achieving healthy skin requires a commitment to the right process: protect, repair, and then treat.

After so many years as a dermatologist, the one thing people find hard to believe is that you don't need a 10-step routine. You just need to understand your skin. Less is more when it comes to maintaining a healthy skin barrier.

Is your skin suddenly itchy, sensitive, or unhappy? It's likely a damaged skin barrier. I explain what the skin barrier is, how it gets stripped by overuse of cleansers or sun exposure, and how to restore it with hydration and the right products.

Cleansing is the first essential step, but over-cleansing can strip your skin's natural barrier. I explain the right way to cleanse, recommending no more than two to three times a day and using micellar water for a refresh if needed.

If your skincare isn't working, you don't need more products, you need the right ones. I explain how to fix your routine by stopping trend-chasing, focusing on your skin barrier, layering with intention, and matching actives to your goals.

About Dermatologist's Corner: Essential Skincare Advice

Most people come to me with damaged skin barriers caused by over-exfoliation or a cocktail of conflicting actives. Before booking an appointment, look at your current routine: if you are using more than three products, you are likely doing more harm than good. I help you strip back the chaos and focus on the fundamental trio: gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen.
