What I Do
I bring people together with music and movement. My events are built around joy, whether it's a Basement Bhangra night or a Bollywood Disco throwback. For me, event curation is about creating a vibe that celebrates South Asian culture and the diaspora, right here in NYC and wherever the music takes us.
My Event Approach
It's never just a party. I curate inclusive spaces for everyone, mixing radical queer joy, filmi nostalgia, and real community activism. From Pride blowouts to museum galas, I want folks to feel like it’s their space.
- My curation means handpicking diverse music lineups, mixing legends with rising stars, and weaving in DJs, dancers, and bands so it never feels stale.
- I handle full-scale production - from outdoor concerts to club nights, I manage logistics, venues, and all the behind-the-scenes work that make events flow.
Community First
I work with some of NYC’s biggest cultural spots like Lincoln Center and Brooklyn Museum, and also with grassroots collectives like DRUM and SAKHI. Events are more than music - they’re a way for these groups to connect and celebrate.
Types of Events
I do South Asian cultural festival production for Diwali and Holi, block parties, queer-centric event experiences, and museum gala event production. Each one has its own energy and its own story.
Why It Matters
Basement Bhangra started as a party, but it grew into a legacy for our community. As we say - “Yaar beli ban ban toliyan, paun basement bhangre 'ch boliyan…” That’s the heartbeat I bring to every event.

My Story
Hey, I’m DJ Rekha. Been spinning beats and building wild, welcoming dance floors for a long time now. Basement Bhangra started as a way to blast Punjabi music in NYC clubs, and it just blew up! I’m not just about the music - I collect flyers, photos, all that, cause our party history matters. Donated my stash to NYU so anyone can see how our scene grew. For me, it’s all linked - the beats, the people, the stories.
My Work
DJ, Producer, Curator, Educator - I play festivals, clubs, private parties, and curate events. I also give talks on music and culture.
