I'm a DJ and curator specializing in South Asian dance music, from Bhangra to Bollywood grooves. I create inclusive parties and events that celebrate our culture and bring the community together on the dance floor.

Behind the decks is my home. Here I am on the mic, hyping the crowd and mixing tracks at The Sultan Room. It's not just about playing music; it's about hosting the party and making sure everyone feels the vibe.

My Bollywood Disco parties are a space for everyone, and the Proud Edition is especially close to my heart. This flyer shows how I create themed nights that celebrate our queer and South Asian communities with filmi classics and eclectic disco grooves.

My events often feature incredible live performers. Here's the legendary Malkit Singh, the King of Bhangra, electrifying the SummerStage crowd. I love curating shows that bring together iconic artists and new talent.

Community is at the core of what I do. Sharing the stage and a smile with fellow artists is a huge part of the experience. It’s all about collaboration and uplifting the talented people in our circle.

Collaboration is everything. Here I am on stage with the incredible Raja Kumari during a surprise performance at Basement Bhangra Bacchanal. I love curating lineups that bring together diverse, powerful artists to create one-of-a-kind moments.

My events are proud and inclusive spaces. The "Bollywood Disco: Proud Edition" is an annual highlight, kicking off Pride month with a celebration of radical queer joy within the South Asian community. Everyone is welcome on my dance floor.

I bring legends to the stage. It was an honor to have the King of Bhangra, Malkit Singh, perform at Basement Bhangra Bacchanal. Curating events means I get to showcase both iconic and emerging talent from the global diaspora.

I curate and produce South Asian cultural events in NYC, handling everything from music lineups and venue logistics to creating inclusive spaces for community groups and festivals.

On stage for a panel discussion at the 1497 South Asian Lodge. I love these opportunities to sit down and talk about the intersection of culture, community, and art, sharing stories and ideas with other creators.

Here I am with Gracia Brown from NYU's A/P/A Institute, going through my personal collection of flyers and photos. This archival work with the Fales Library is about preserving the history of Basement Bhangra and NYC's South Asian diasporic nightlife for future generations.

My workshops are all about hands-on experience. This poster for the Brrrrhangra Dance Party at Lincoln Center shows how I partner with groups like Ajna Dance Company to create free, all-ages events that get everyone moving and learning about Bhangra.

This event at the Museum of the Moving Image combined a film discussion with a Bollywood Disco party. I often collaborate with artists like director Saleem Nasir Gondal to host talks that explore the cultural DNA of filmi classics and their influence on the diaspora.

Activism is central to my work. Here I am with Meena Harris and Padma Lakshmi in Philadelphia, canvassing and using my Punjabi to get out the vote. It’s about showing up for our communities in every way possible.

Attending a Diwali celebration at the White House with President Joe Biden. Being invited to these spaces is a recognition of the cultural work our community has been doing for decades, bringing our sounds and stories to the forefront.

My Story

Hey, I’m DJ Rekha. Been spinning beats and building wild, welcoming dance floors for a long time now. Basement Bhangra started as a way to blast Punjabi music in NYC clubs, and it just blew up! I’m not just about the music - I collect flyers, photos, all that, cause our party history matters. Donated my stash to NYU so anyone can see how our scene grew. For me, it’s all linked - the beats, the people, the stories.
