Inside the Kathak Classroom: Our Process of Taalim

Kathak is a vichardhara, a thought process. Step inside our studio, where taalim goes beyond a syllabus to nurture you as a dancer.

Tribhuwan Maharaj explains how 'taalim' and exams align. While our training often goes far beyond the syllabus, exams are a useful tool to assess a student's grasp of the fundamentals.

Guru Maa Smt. Ruby Mishra discusses the concept of 'pariksha' (examination) in classical arts, breaking down the traditional methods of 'Dekhya, Seekhya, and Pariksha'.

A glimpse into a 5-day intensive Kathak workshop led by Guru ji Pt. Jai Kishan Maharaj, where students delved into the soul of Teen Taal.

A behind-the-scenes look at a rehearsal, where Guru Maa Smt. Ruby Mishra discusses costume concepts with students to create a performance that is both raw and organized.

In our classes, we teach that dancing is a way to connect with the Almighty. We are currently accepting registrations for our online Kathak batch.

About this collection

In our classes, we focus on the fundamental Lucknow Gharana style—Ang Shudhi (body conditioning), intricate footwork, and rhythmic precision. A key part of our methodology is the use of live Tabla accompaniment in every session, teaching you to listen and respond to the beat rather than following a recorded track. Whether you are training with us at our Noida studio or online, we expect a commitment to regular riyaaz (practice) and provide a structured path from basic technique to performance readiness.

Our approach to taalim follows the traditional principle of 'Dekhya, Seekhya, and Pariksha' (Observing, Learning, and Testing). We believe that the true pariksha happens on the manch (stage), not just in the classroom. While we offer structured monthly courses and dual certification through the Pracheen Kala Kendra affiliation to provide academic recognition, our core teaching far exceeds any standard syllabus.

We structure our training in two main formats: monthly foundation classes and intensive workshops. In foundation classes, held twice a week for one hour, we build your understanding of Teen Taal and posture. For those looking for deeper immersion, our advanced sessions include complex Tihai and emotive Abhinaya, preparing students for the Tarkash solo series.

For online students, we provide session recordings to support your home practice, ensuring that the distance from our studio does not hinder your progress. We do not just teach steps; we guide you through the process of connecting with the art form, whether you are a beginner or an advanced student preparing for the Ganda Bandhan initiation. We keep our group sizes between 15 to 20 students to ensure every individual receives direct correction and guidance from us.
