Bharatanatyam Workshops & Mentorship
My approach to dance is less of a checklist and more of a lived journey. Whether we are training in a studio in Bengaluru or connecting virtually from London, my sessions focus on making research, rhythm, and storytelling an accessible part of your daily practice.
A look inside a workshop on Marathi Abhang poetry at Temple Steps Dance Academy. We focus on bringing literature to life through movement, making each session a blend of dance, storytelling, and cultural exploration.
I am incredibly proud to share the performance schedules of my disciples. Mentoring dancers and watching them take the stage for their own solos and ensemble presentations is one of the most fulfilling parts of my work.
A vibrant Abhang workshop at Tarikita Studio. These sessions are interactive, filled with singing, discussion, and of course, a lot of dancing. It's a space for dancers of all levels to connect with the poetry and with each other.
In this Q&A session, I share practical advice for dancers training in challenging conditions, like cold winters or small spaces. My teaching includes specific body conditioning routines and choreographic strategies to build strength and adaptability, no matter where you practice.
About this collection
These workshops are an invitation to treat dance as a rigorous, ongoing inquiry. When you sign up, you aren't just learning choreography; you're diving into the literature behind the movement and the mechanics of your own body. If you are a practitioner looking for honest feedback on your form, or wanting to deconstruct your creative process, my mentorship sessions provide the space to bridge that gap from student to artist.
A Research-Driven Approach
I view dance as a language. My training sessions are designed to move beyond repetitive mechanical steps. We focus on 'Riyaz'—a dedicated, disciplined practice—that incorporates the history and poetry behind the performance.
What We Cover
- Foundational Nritta: We strip back the dance to its architectural roots. Sessions focus on body conditioning, Angashuddhi (limb perfection), and rhythmic clarity.
- Abhinaya & Storytelling: We analyze rare texts, Marathi Abhangs, and Tamil poetry to understand the emotional landscape before we translate it into facial expressions and gestures.
- Choreographic Development: For advanced students, we explore the 'Kalam' process. This is about devising your own pieces, learning how to structure your ideas, and finding your unique movement vocabulary.
Flexible Training Models
I understand that life doesn't always happen in a studio. My training is designed to accommodate different realities:
- In-Person Masterclasses: Held in cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, London, and Berlin, these are immersive two-day blocks focusing on intense technical refinement and live musical accompaniment.
- Virtual Technique Series: A structured, four-week digital commitment. This is where we break down routines for small-space practice—essential for dancers living in colder climates or urban apartments with limited room.
- Private Mentorship: 75-minute sessions reserved for choreography audits and career navigation. We look at your technique under a microscope, refining micro-movements and stage presence.
Whether you are aiming for your first solo or looking to deepen your existing repertoire, the goal is to make your practice sustainable, thoughtful, and technically sound.
Divya Ravi
Dance is how I listen to the world, and I love creating spaces where we can dig deeper into that rhythm together. I’ve worked with students everywhere from London to Bengaluru, and I find the most joy in watching a dancer find their own voice through the lens of ancient poetry.
