Lineage, Community & Collaborations

Dance is never a solo pursuit. It is built on the wisdom of gurus, the synergy with musicians, and the support of a vibrant community. These moments celebrate the connections that sustain my practice.

An intimate post performance discussion with the audience. I believe art is a dialogue, and I am deeply grateful for these opportunities to share my process and hear from those who engage with my work.

A precious moment with a senior guru before a performance. The blessings and guidance of our elders are an invaluable part of an artist's life, connecting us to the deep roots of our tradition.

Taking on the role of the Nattuvanar, wielding the cymbals to conduct the orchestra for my students' performance. It was a nerve wracking but incredibly rewarding experience that gave me a new appreciation for this crucial role.

A fun, candid moment during a rehearsal with my musical ensemble. The camaraderie and shared laughter are just as important as the serious work we do together.

A moment of gratitude on stage. A performance is a collective effort, and I am always thankful for the musicians and technicians who support me, and the audience that receives the work.

With the respected scholar and artist Parwati Dutta at Mahagami Gurukul. Connecting with fellow artists and thinkers is a vital source of inspiration and learning.

A photoshoot with my dear friend and fellow dancer, Utthara Unni. The friendships we build through dance are a special kind of bond, rooted in a shared passion and understanding.

About this collection

When you step into my workshops or mentorship sessions, you are not just learning steps; you are joining a dialogue. Whether it is through the live musical accompaniment in my masterclasses or the deep-dive research into ancient texts, my approach is designed to connect you to the lineage of this art form. If you are looking for a mentor who values rigorous technique alongside the camaraderie of a shared artistic journey, let's talk about your goals.

Bharatanatyam is a practice passed down through generations, and my journey is deeply rooted in the blessings of my teachers. From my foundational years to the ongoing guidance that shapes my choreography today, I view every performance and every class as a continuation of that lineage.

My collaboration style is central to this. Whether I am teaching in Chennai, Bengaluru, or conducting a masterclass in London, I prioritize the presence of live musicians. The synergy between the dancer and the mridangist or vocalist is where the rhythm comes alive, and it is a key component of the training I offer.

My mentorship and workshops are built to replicate this spirit of interdependence. I don't believe in distant teaching; I believe in the 'community in the studio.' My students form a support network where questions are encouraged, research is shared, and growth is mutual. If you want to explore the collaborative side of Bharatanatyam—how to work with a live ensemble, how to interpret ancient poetry, or simply how to find your place in this lineage—I am here to guide that process. We move beyond just copying steps to understanding the 'why' behind every movement.

I’m Divya. For me, dance is a way of living and listening, deeply connected to the teachers and musicians who have walked this path with me. I treat my classes as a collaborative space where we dive into history, poetry, and movement together.
