Educational Architecture Designed for Well-being
Educational architecture should do more than house classrooms. Our approach integrates nature, light, and passive cooling to create campus environments where students can focus and thrive.
We are honored that Vidyashilp Academy in Bengaluru won the Educational Building Award at the LOOP Design Awards. This image shows the building's distinctive facade, where perforated screens create a beautiful interplay of light and shadow, reflecting our goal to design inspiring learning environments.
A wide shot of the Vidyashilp Academy, showcasing the rhythmic pattern of the 'jaali' facade against a clear blue sky. The design balances simplicity and performance, using passive strategies to create a comfortable and climate-responsive educational space.
This image captures the entrance of the award-winning Vidyashilp Academy. The architecture is designed to be welcoming and accessible, with clean lines and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape, setting the tone for a nurturing learning environment.
The facade of Vidyashilp Academy is a study in material intelligence. The large 'jaali'-inspired panels are not just decorative; they filter sunlight, maintain privacy, and ensure constant airflow, elevating simple materials into purposeful elements of climate-responsive design.
Inside Vidyashilp Academy, the 'jaali' screens cast intricate patterns of light across the polished floors and walls. This dynamic play of light animates the space throughout the day, creating a visually stimulating and serene atmosphere for learning.
A person walks along a corridor at Vidyashilp Academy, where sunlight filters through the perforated facade, casting patterns on a vibrant orange wall. This image captures the sensory experience of the architecture, where light itself becomes a material.
The open, stepped plaza at Vidyashilp Academy serves as a central gathering space for the school community. The design moves away from enclosed typologies, featuring partial-height walls and open walkways to promote natural cross-ventilation and a sense of openness.
The shadow of a large tree is cast upon the textured wall of Vidyashilp Academy, next to a vertical strip of 'jaali'. This image highlights our commitment to integrating the natural landscape, preserving mature trees and making them part of the architectural experience.
The main entrance of Vidyashilp Academy is framed by large perforated screens. This design provides a grand sense of arrival while functionally serving to shade the glass entrance and ventilate the building's interiors.
At Vidyashilp Academy, circulation paths are carefully designed around existing mature trees. This approach not only preserves the natural landscape but also cultivates a continuous connection with the outdoors, creating a school that breathes with its environment.
About Architecture for Learning & Well-being
We move away from the traditional, enclosed classroom model. Instead, we design permeable, climate-responsive campuses where corridors channel breezes, courtyards encourage social interaction, and jaali facades filter harsh sunlight. This creates a sensory-rich environment that directly supports the mental and physical well-being of the student body, as seen in our work with Vidyashilp Academy.
Architecture in an educational setting acts as the third teacher. Our methodology, rooted in our S.O.U.L. (Sustainable, Optimised, Unique, Liveable) philosophy, treats every square foot of a campus as a functional learning opportunity.
Climate-Responsive Design
In India, thermal comfort is non-negotiable. We replace reliance on air conditioning with passive strategies. Our buildings incorporate:
- Passive Cooling: Using 'baolis' and courtyards to create micro-climates that lower ambient temperatures.
- Jaali Facades: These screens serve a dual purpose—filtering harsh daylight to prevent glare while maintaining privacy and facilitating cross-ventilation.
- Natural Lighting: We optimize building orientation to ensure 90%+ daylight usage in classrooms, significantly reducing energy consumption.
Well-being and Environment
Our projects, such as the Vidyashilp Academy in Bengaluru—recognized as a UNESCO Happy School—demonstrate that school architecture must integrate with the landscape, not conquer it. We prioritize the preservation of mature trees and the creation of open, walkable spines that connect the built environment to the outdoors. By fostering a continuous connection with nature, we help reduce stress for both students and faculty.
We utilize advanced BIM (Building Information Modelling) and AI-driven analysis to ensure our vision is constructible and efficient. Whether planning a new school or renovating an existing campus, our focus remains on creating spaces that foster community and enable students to perform at their best.
Morphogenesis
At Morphogenesis, Sonali and I lead a team that treats architecture as a fundamental part of the learning experience. We don’t just build blocks; we create campuses that breathe, adapt to the climate, and foster a genuine sense of connection for students and faculty.
