Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) for Natural Hair Coverage
Scalp Micropigmentation creates the illusion of hair density using medical-grade pigments. It is a precise, non-surgical camouflage technique designed for those who prefer a clean buzz-cut look or need to reduce the contrast of thinning hair.
Many people ask me about getting a tattoo for baldness. Dekhiye, Scalp Micropigmentation, or SMP, is a highly specialized medical procedure, not a simple tattoo. In this video, I explain how I use it to create the illusion of a full head of hair with a buzz cut, which is an excellent camouflage for extensive hair loss.
My approach is always doctor-led and based on years of experience. As a cosmetic dermatologist and hair transplant surgeon with a background at AIIMS Delhi, I ensure every procedure, including SMP, is performed with the highest standards of medical safety and aesthetic precision.
A clean, shaved look is popular, but achieving it the wrong way can be dangerous. I often see patients with issues from improper methods like scalp waxing. Here, I explain why you should avoid it and share safer, doctor-approved alternatives like trimming and proper shaving techniques to maintain a healthy scalp.

Dekhiye, SMP is not a hair transplant—it will not grow new hair. It is a precise medical camouflage technique where I deposit pigments to mimic shaved hair follicles. If you are experiencing thinning or want a clean buzz-cut look, this helps blend the scalp with your existing hair to make it look fuller. We do this in 3 sessions to ensure the pigment settles naturally without looking like a flat tattoo.
Many patients come to me asking for a quick fix, and SMP is often the honest solution for those who are not candidates for a transplant or simply prefer a shaved look.
Why I follow a 3-session protocol
SMP is not a one-day process. We perform this in three distinct phases:
- Foundation: Establishing the hairline design and base density.
- Densification: Adding more dots to create a realistic 3D shadow.
- Refinement: Final blending to match your natural hair tone.
Spacing these sessions 10-20 days apart allows the pigment to heal and settle, ensuring the result is subtle and not artificial.
Is SMP safe?
Because I use organic, charcoal-based pigments and perform these in a sterile Operation Theatre setup, we avoid the infection risks often seen with salon-based tattooing. I personally map your hairline to suit your face shape. Whether it is a soft receded look or a sharp edge-up, the design must look age-appropriate.
Remember, this technique reduces the contrast between your skin and your hair, effectively masking the scalp visibility. It is an excellent option for diffuse thinning, crown thinning, or even covering old linear FUT or FUE scars that have left unwanted patches.
