Crowd Control: My Approach to Wedding DJing
I don't just play tracks. I read the room to make sure every guest, from the cousins to the grandparents, is on the floor. Here is how I keep the energy high all night.
If appreciation was currency, I'd be a billionaire. Hearing the crowd chant my name is the best payment an artist can receive.
What do DJs actually do? We become part of the party, we hype up the crowd, and we make sure everyone is having the time of their lives.
Mission successful. When a guest tells you that you made them dance so much their drink wore off, you know you've done your job.
Who needs words when you can dance and smile? Music is the answer, and the connection with the crowd is everything.
It's not Delhi vs Mumbai, it's Delhi loves Mumbai. Uniting people on the dance floor is one of the best parts of my job.
The show must go on. No matter if I have a headache, fever, or flu, what matters is that the crowd has an amazing time.
You can't deny the bride's request. Even if a song doesn't fit the vibe, if the bride loves it, I'll play it. It's her day.
Sometimes it's all about the last song. When the hotel shuts down the music, the crowd's reaction tells you everything you need to know.
What do I caption this? Just a perfect slow-motion shot of the crowd's energy and joy. This is why I do what I do.
What is this guy trying to say? I think he's saying I set the dance floor on fire. I'll take it as a compliment.
About The Crowd Connection
I don't come with a pre-recorded set because every crowd is different. I spend about 70% of the time interacting with guests and taking requests, and 30% on the actual technical mix. If the energy on the floor feels low, I pivot the tempo immediately. And yes, if the bride asks for a specific song that breaks the flow, I play it anyway. It is your day, and my job is to make sure you have the best time possible.
My job as a wedding DJ is not to stand behind the console for five hours and look cool. It is to facilitate the party. Whether it is a high-octane Sangeet after-party or a more traditional reception, I keep my eyes on the dance floor, not my laptop. If I see the older guests wanting a retro Bollywood classic, I switch gears instantly. If the younger crowd needs something faster, I bring in the tech house or hip hop vibes.
I handle the Baraat processions as intensely as the main event. It is about understanding the transition—how to move from the chaotic energy of the groom’s entry to the more refined atmosphere of a cocktail night. I regularly collaborate with percussionists and dhol players because a live element adds that extra layer of organic energy you just can't get from a playlist.
I also keep it real regarding gear. I rely on industry-standard Pioneer setups because I need my equipment to be as responsive as I am when I am reading the room. If you are planning a destination wedding or a local Delhi event, the logistics change, but the philosophy remains the same: the crowd dictates the setlist. I am there to guide the energy, take your requests with love, and keep the party moving until the venue shuts the lights.
DJ Sukhbir
I'm DJ Sukhbir. For me, DJing isn't about showing off; it's about the connection I build with the people in front of me. I live for those moments where the whole room is in sync, from the kids to the grandparents.
