When you clean and lube your drivetrain regularly, you stop road grit from grinding down your gears. It keeps your shifting precise and quiet, and honestly, it saves you from expensive component replacements in the long run. A quick degrease and proper lube can make an old bike feel new again. ### Why Maintenance Matters Cycling is about freedom, but mechanical issues can kill that vibe fast. I see so many riders in Mumbai struggle with shifting issues or drivetrain wear simply because they haven't adopted a basic cleaning routine. Your drivetrain—the chain, cassette, and chainrings—is the heart of your bike. If it's dirty or dry, you're not just losing efficiency; you're actively wearing out your parts. ### My Go-To Maintenance Routine Cleaning doesn't need to be a weekend-long project. * **Degrease:** Use a reliable degreaser to strip away the old, gritty oil. If you don't have fancy tools, a simple brush and a cloth work wonders on the cassette. * **Dry:** This is the step most people skip. Make sure the chain is completely dry before adding new lube. Moisture causes rust. * **Lube:** Apply a small drop to each roller. Don't drown it. After you rotate the pedals to let it settle, wipe off the excess. Excess lube only attracts more dust and mud, which creates a grinding paste that eats your chain. ### Installing Cleats If you're moving to clipless pedals, the setup is everything. Poorly aligned cleats are the leading cause of knee pain for new riders. Start with a neutral position, ensuring your foot is comfortable and your knee tracks in a straight line during the pedal stroke.
