What sounds punchy or clean in isolation often creates mud once it hits the full arrangement, so always toggle the mix back on to hear how your adjustments impact the track as a whole. ### Mastering the Basics Music production is less about having the most expensive plugins and more about understanding what you are doing with the ones you have. We focus on two fundamental pillars: Compression and EQ. #### Compression: It Is Automatic Volume Control Beginners often crush their signal, killing the life out of a performance. Think of a compressor as a hand on the volume knob. It turns the loud parts down to create a balanced, consistent sound. We show you how to set the Threshold, Ratio, Attack, and Release so you control the dynamics without making the track sound lifeless. Whether you are using a digital plugin or emulating our studio’s Teletronix LA-2A, the goal is transparency. #### EQ: Subtraction Before Addition One of the biggest mistakes is boosting frequencies to 'fix' a sound. We teach you to start with subtractive EQ. Instead of piling on more gain, find the frequencies that are clashing or muddy and cut them. Use a narrow Q to identify the problem area and carve it out.
