I teach you how to bend the strings—the *meend*—to mimic the vocal nuances of the original singer, which is the secret to making a film melody truly sing on this instrument. It is a practical way to develop your ear while having fun with music you already know. Learning film music on the sitar is often the best gateway into classical music. Many students come to me wanting to play a specific Bollywood or Kannada hit, and through that, we naturally unlock the foundations of the sitar. ### Why Start with Film Covers? * **Accessible Foundations:** Instead of starting with abstract scales, we look at the melodies you already love. This makes the initial struggle with *Da, Ra* (stroking patterns) and fret positioning much more rewarding. * **Technique Building:** To play a film song accurately, you need control. We work on your ability to slide between notes and maintain rhythm, which are the exact skills needed for classical *Ragas* like Yaman or Bhupali. * **Ear Training:** You learn to listen for the micro-tones (*shruti*) that define Indian music, helping you move from reading notation to playing by intuition. ### My Teaching Approach I focus on the *guru-shishya* tradition, meaning our lessons are not just transactional. We sit, we practice (*riyaaz*), and we troubleshoot.
