I often start by simply observing the room's energy—if a child is nervous about an appointment, my puppet might start a quiet, silly conversation about their favorite snacks or a funny story. It is about being responsive, not loud, ensuring the interaction is soothing and never intrusive. Medical puppetry is less about a traditional stage show and more about creating a 'therapeutic connection' in environments that are often stressful. In a hospital corridor or an oncology ward, the focus is on micro-interactions. My puppets—like Paprika the chicken—provide a non-threatening third party that children can talk to, often expressing feelings they might not tell an adult. For healthcare staff, these interactions act as a brief, necessary reset. Whether I am at a facility like Rainbow Children’s Hospital or partnering with an NGO for outreach, the process is highly adaptable. We do not need a formal stage setup. We just need a little space to talk, listen, and improvise based on what the child or caregiver needs in that moment. My approach to these sessions includes: * **Responsive Interaction:** I gauge the mood of the room before starting. If the environment is high-stress, the puppets take a slower, more conversational approach. * **Inclusive Engagement:** I involve the nursing and medical staff, turning them into part of the story, which helps humanize the clinical setting. * **Portability:** I can navigate restricted spaces easily, bringing the story to the bedside if a child cannot make it to a common area.
