It strips away the noise of color to focus purely on structure, light, and the raw expression in the eyes. ## Photos and videos - ![This is a graphite pencil portrait of actress Maisie Williams. I used a range of soft and hard graphite pencils to create the smooth shading on her skin and the fine details in her hair and eyes.](https://assets.mytribe.in/insecure/raw:1/plain/s3://mytribe-assets-production/ea052dd5-0f41-42f9-9362-65fc9cb4204d) ## About Classic Graphite Pencil Portraits Graphite is about mastering the transition between light and shadow. I use professional-grade pencils ranging from 2H for those light, crisp highlights to 8B for the deepest, most velvety blacks to capture depth in every feature. When you opt for a classic graphite portrait, you are choosing a piece that relies entirely on precision. I work exclusively on A4 size, 200+ GSM acid-free paper, which provides a textured surface ideal for building layers of tone without damaging the fibers. This thickness is crucial for longevity, ensuring the paper does not yellow over time. My process involves a gradual layering technique. I begin with light sketches using hard pencils like 2H to outline the facial features. From there, I build up the shading using a variety of grades up to 8B to achieve deep contrast. Whether it is a portrait for a gift or a personal keepsake, I finish every piece with a matte fixative spray. This layer is vital as it prevents smudging and protects the delicate graphite dust from rubbing off. This style captures a head-to-chest composition, focusing on the character in the face. Note that while these portraits are detailed, they are not framed upon delivery. I ship them flat, protected between rigid boards to ensure they reach you without any creases or bends. ## About Sushant Srane I'm Sushant.
