You will notice that in my playing, I prioritize the balance—ensuring the tabla bols complement the melody rather than overpowering it. For the best sound, I always ask that we set up two microphones on short stands during the soundcheck so the audience hears every nuance of the performance. ### The Art of Sangat To me, accompaniment is not just about keeping time; it is a conversation. When I play for a vocalist, a sitarist, or a ghazal singer, my ears are always tuned to their melody. In the Punjab Gharana tradition, we learn that the tabla must breathe with the artist. Whether I am playing a subtle Theka for a slow Khayal or engaging in an energetic Sawal-Jawab (question-answer) session during a jugalbandi, the priority is always to elevate the music, not just add noise. ### Jugalbandi and Collaboration Jugalbandi is where the magic happens. It is a reunion of two musical souls on stage. I have had the privilege of performing at prestigious festivals like Saptak and Virasat, sharing the stage with incredibly talented musicians. During these duets, I look for moments to improvise and respond to the lead artist's phrasing. This interplay is what makes live classical music so vital and unpredictable. ### Technical Requirements For a smooth performance, I usually require a standard professional tabla set tuned to the main artist's pitch. I prefer to arrive 45 to 60 minutes before the show for a dedicated soundcheck. I need two microphones on short stands and a monitor fold-back so I can hear the balance clearly on stage. This preparation ensures that when we start, we can focus entirely on the music and the connection with the audience. ## About Surjeet Singh Tabla is more than music to me; it is a spiritual journey.
