I design peaceful indoor and outdoor spaces in Mumbai using rare specimens, Japanese Maples, and hand-finished stone planters. ## Photos and videos - ![The Acer Palmatum, or Japanese Maple, is the heart of any Zen garden. It is about balancing foliage texture and light. I often advise against using generic plastic pots for these setups. We use porous, textured Atlantis or rustic cement planters because they allow the roots to breathe while perfectly matching the aged look of specimens like Japanese Maples or Bonsai. Creating a Zen garden in a bustling city like Mumbai is about controlled design rather than vast space. It is about creating a mental break from the daily rush. My process starts by assessing your natural light—specifically whether you have that crucial morning sun or deep shade. A Japanese Maple (Acer Palmatum) might look stunning, but it requires different care and placement than a hardy Fern. I select plants based on their architectural value. We pair vertical ferns with low-profile, hand-finished stone planters to ground the energy. If you have a balcony, we might integrate privacy screening with Bamboo or Raphis Palm to shield the view while letting the breeze flow. For indoor nooks, the placement of a stone Buddha statue is never random; it acts as an anchor point that draws the eye, turning a simple shelf or corner into a dedicated meditation spot. I work closely with homeowners and designers to ensure the weight of these pots and the height of the greenery fit your specific balcony loading limits or living room proportions. Every piece, from the soil mix to the top dressing of pebbles, is chosen to ensure the plant thrives and the aesthetic remains clean and calm. ## About Sparrow Design I am the founder of Sparrow Design in Khar. I see plants as living art, not just home decor. When I design a tranquil space for you, I am looking for the right balance between the greenery's texture and the vessel it sits in, ensuring your corner feels like a genuine escape.
