For a traditional baithak, we keep it acoustic and intimate, where guests can hear the natural resonance of the sitar strings. For larger auditoriums, I require specific sound support, including monitors, to ensure the subtle nuances of the meend do not get lost in the venue's amplification. My classical performances are rooted in sadhana, a lifelong discipline of practice. A solo concert is a conversation between the sitar and the tabla, unfolding in the time-bound structure of a raaga. We typically start with the alap, the slow, meditative opening that sets the mood, and gradually move into the jod and jhala, where the music gains momentum and complexity. ### Choosing Your Format * **Intimate Baithak:** Best for gatherings of up to 40 guests. This is a chamber-style performance where the music breathes with the audience. No heavy staging is needed; the focus is on a distraction-free connection. * **Formal Stage Recital:** Designed for auditoriums or corporate events. This is a structured performance lasting 60 to 90 minutes. I bring a senior tabla maestro to provide the rhythmic interplay essential for a high-energy recital. ### Customizing the Experience I select raagas based on your event's timing and desired atmosphere. A serene morning melody like Raag Basant Mukhari creates a different environment than the evening energy of Raag Jaijaiwanti. My goal is to ensure the music aligns with the natural flow of your day. If you are hosting a formal event, I also provide an English introduction to the musical pieces, helping guests unfamiliar with Hindustani classical music appreciate the intricacies of what they are hearing. ## About Soumitra Thakur I see the sitar not just as an instrument, but as a path to peace and focus.
