By utilizing floor-to-ceiling glass walls that slide away completely, we have effectively merged the living area with the exterior stone patio. This design choice ensures that the natural breeze and garden views are not just external features, but integral parts of the home's daily atmosphere. Our approach to 'The Grey Grotto' was centered on material honesty and environmental context. We opted for a palette of exposed brick, micro-topping cement textures, and natural stone, which anchor the structure firmly into its surroundings on the outskirts of Bengaluru. Key design elements include: * **Passive Ventilation:** The central courtyard features a traditional terracotta jali screen. This is not purely aesthetic; it allows for consistent airflow while creating intricate patterns of light and shadow throughout the day. * **Volume Design:** The double-height living area creates a sense of scale, balanced by the warmth of natural wooden furniture and the grounding presence of dark, earthy wall treatments. * **Indoor-Outdoor Connectivity:** The sunken fire pit lounge and the dining pavilion are extensions of the main structure. We designed these spaces to encourage social interaction, with sightlines directed toward the pool and the landscape beyond. This project represents our ongoing exploration of how modern residential architecture can respect its location while providing a sophisticated living environment.
