Often, they are navigating chronic pain or slippery flooring that makes simple tasks like eating or standing up feel dangerous. I help you identify these hidden physical stressors before they turn into behavioral problems, focusing on practical adjustments like non-slip surfaces and elevated feeding stations that provide immediate relief. ### Understanding Their Reality My approach to care for small and senior dogs is rooted in one question: What is this dog feeling? If your senior dog avoids jumping on the couch, it might be hip pain. If your small dog snaps when you pick them up, it might be a fear of being restrained without warning. I help you move beyond quick fixes and address the root causes of their discomfort. ### The Senior Dog Audit Senior dogs are not just 'slowing down.' They are often dealing with arthritis, muscle atrophy, and joint inflammation. We look at your home setup to find 'trap' areas. Are your floors slippery? This forces your dog to constantly tense their muscles, leading to fatigue and further injury. We work on simple, low-cost modifications: * **Traction:** Using foam mats or rugs in high-traffic areas. * **Mobility:** Using ramps instead of expecting them to leap up onto furniture. * **Feeding:** Raising bowls to a height that allows a neutral spine, shifting weight off painful front limbs. ### Consent for Small Dogs Small dogs often live in a world made for giants. They are frequently picked up, passed around, and loomed over without their consent. This causes immense stress and can lead to defensive behaviors like nipping or barking. I teach you to advocate for your dog, ensuring they have the space to choose interactions. We focus on teaching them cues to jump up onto furniture themselves, rather than being lifted, which rebuilds their confidence and trust in you. ### Why My Approach Works I do not believe in 'fixing' these behaviors with corrections. If your dog is in pain or afraid, a correction only teaches them to hide their discomfort.
