I prioritize the structural reality first, installing robust drainage cell layers and waterproof membranes so the building remains protected while the greenery thrives. It is the invisible work beneath the soil that makes a rooftop garden sustainable for the long term. Designing a rooftop sanctuary requires a distinct approach compared to ground-level landscaping. We must account for wind loads, sunlight patterns, and strict load-bearing capacities. My design process starts by defining clear zones for seating, entertaining, and privacy, ensuring the layout flows naturally from your indoor living area. I often use mature specimen trees, hoisted by crane, to immediately establish scale and shade, avoiding the years of waiting for saplings to mature. Waterproofing and irrigation are the cornerstones of my work. Every project includes drainage cell installations and geo-textile layers to ensure proper water evacuation, which is vital during Mumbai’s intense monsoons. To combat the city's noise, I incorporate layered green screens using tall ornamental grasses and vertical wall gardens. These act as natural sound buffers. Combined with integrated IP65-rated lighting, these spaces transform from breezy afternoon lounges into glowing, quiet retreats once the sun sets.
