When I perform without microphones, the acoustics of the room become my instrument, and I can hear the subtle breath of the other artist. It is a dialogue, not a show, which requires a deep synchronization of Raag and Taal before we even sit down. There is a specific kind of magic that happens in a mehfil or baithak that big auditoriums simply cannot replicate. For me, this is where the true essence of the Punjab Gharana style shines. Without the barrier of heavy sound equipment, the subtle nuances of my Tabla—the crispness of the Nikas and the resonance of the bass—reach you directly. Whether you are hosting a private gathering in Mumbai or a community event in Pune, these settings are about connection. My approach involves a close dialogue with the main artist. We synchronize well before the performance, discussing the specific Raags and Taals to ensure our improvisational chemistry is sharp. I often perform purely acoustic for smaller groups of up to 30 people, ensuring the sound remains balanced and immersive. If you are looking for an experience where you can see the effort, the 'riyaz', and the tradition up close, this format is for you. I bring not just the percussion, but also the historical context of the compositions, explaining the mathematics behind the rhythms through Padhant before I play.
