I personally assess the fabric density and the condition of the borders to see if they will support a modern silhouette like a flared Anarkali or a contemporary lehenga. We often need to strategically place the original embroidery or woven borders to ensure the new outfit retains that vintage charm while fitting perfectly to your current size. Repurposing an heirloom is more than just sewing; it is about preservation. Whether it is your mother's wedding saree or a heavily embellished dupatta from your grandmother's collection, these fabrics carry stories. My goal is to make sure those stories continue to be worn and celebrated rather than hidden away in a trunk. ### The Transformation Process When you bring a piece in, we start by checking the fabric's integrity. Older silks or chiffons often need specialized care. I carefully deconstruct the piece, removing damaged sections while salvaging every inch of precious border work. Depending on your vision, we can transform a 5.5-meter saree into a structured Anarkali, a voluminous gown, or a chic co-ord set. ### Why Structure Matters Simply stitching a new outfit isn't enough for these heirloom fabrics. I incorporate modern structural elements to make them practical for today's occasions. This includes: * **Quality Lining:** Using heavy Shantoon or high-count cotton to provide opacity and comfort. * **Added Volume:** Attaching layers of cancan (hard net) to give a modern, flared silhouette to traditional saree fabric. * **Support:** Adding horsehair braid at the hem of gowns or lehengas to ensure they hold their shape while you walk.
