Seeing Maestro Mehta conduct the Belgrade Philharmonic, with Pinchas Zukerman and Lang Lang, was a rare opportunity to witness a lifetime of musical relationships in motion. For those who attended, the acoustics of the Jamshed Bhabha Theatre provided the perfect setting for this landmark celebration. When we planned the celebration for Maestro Mehta’s 90th birthday, we wanted to capture the essence of his lifelong contribution to Western classical music. Bringing the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra to Mumbai was a deliberate choice, rooted in a relationship that dates back to 1958. Performing in the Jamshed Bhabha Theatre at the NCPA, known for its superb acoustics, allowed the complexity of works like Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto to resonate fully with our audience. These performances were not just about the final product. Our students had the rare privilege of observing rehearsals and learning directly from visiting artists like Pinchas Zukerman and Lang Lang. This mentorship aspect is central to our foundation, bridging the gap between student practice and professional mastery. We curated this series to offer Mumbai audiences access to high-level artistry, ensuring that the legacy of Western classical music continues to thrive locally. For us, this was a reflection of the enduring power of music to connect cultures and generations. ## About Mehli Mehta Music Foundation At the Mehli Mehta Music Foundation, we work to keep Western classical music alive and thriving in Mumbai.
