I always suggest prepping your lips with a scrub first, and then using a slightly darker lip liner to ground the look, which keeps the focus on your features rather than just the lipstick color. Finding the right lip combination is often about trial and error, but there are a few rules that change the game. ### Why Nudes Can Be Tricky The biggest mistake is choosing a nude that is lighter than your natural skin tone. If you have a wheatish or medium complexion, go for warm undertones like peachy-nudes or mauve-browns. These don't wash you out like cool-toned pinks or greys might. ### My Go-To Layering Hacks If you have a favorite lipstick that feels a bit too drying or flat, try layering. For summer, I love pairing a long-lasting liquid matte with a touch of gloss or a moisturizing balm. This keeps the color on your lips for hours without that uncomfortable, tight feeling. ### Faking Fullness You do not need fillers to achieve a fuller look. My preferred technique is to lightly overline the Cupid's bow and the center of the bottom lip, then blend the liner inward before applying your lipstick. This creates a soft, natural shadow that makes your lips look naturally plump. ### My Current Favorites I test everything I recommend. For a long-wearing summer combo, I often mix a Huda Beauty liquid matte with a Too Faced shade. If you want something quick, the Maybelline Vinyl Ink line gives that glossy finish with impressive staying power.
