Whether it's the fall of light on a pose or the raw gesture of the human form, these sessions are where I feel most connected to my craft. ## Photos and videos - ![This oil on linen figure study was completed over a weekend session with a wonderful Spanish model. There is no room for second-guessing here, but that intensity is exactly what makes the process rewarding. I usually work on primed linen, as it holds the texture of the oil paint and the richness of the shadow tones beautifully. ### My Approach to Figure Studies Painting from life is a different kind of rush. Unlike studio work where I can layer and refine over weeks, a figure study demands focus and immediate decision-making. It is about understanding anatomy, gesture, and how light interacts with the body. I love the collaborative energy of these sessions, especially when working with fellow artists at spaces like the Uchhan Art Gallery. ### Technical Details - **Medium:** I use professional artist-grade oils, such as Gamblin, which offer excellent pigment load and texture. For figure work, I prefer primed linen or canvas board. - **Technique:** My go-to is the alla prima method. I build up the form quickly, focusing on big shapes of light and shadow before refining the details. - **Materials:** I always use high-quality materials to ensure that the work lasts. Whether it is a charcoal sketch on paper or an oil painting on linen, the substrate is just as important as the pigment. ### Commissioning a Study If you are interested in a figure study, I offer these as original, one-of-a-kind pieces. Each painting is signed, dated, and includes context notes about the session. Since these are often done in an expressive, impressionistic style, they make a unique addition to any art collection. Feel free to reach out if you would like to discuss a commission or learn more about my upcoming live sessions. ## About Juhi Kumar I'm Juhi, a Delhi-based artist who thrives on the energy of live painting.
