## About Jodi Mane: A Tale of Two Houses

In this project, we didn't just place two houses on a plot; we analyzed the sun path and prevailing winds to create a natural stack effect. By using double-height volumes and strategically placed windows, we ensured the air moves continuously, reducing the need for artificial cooling. Before deciding on your own layout, consider how your family’s shared spaces can act as thermal buffers rather than just transitional corridors.

### Architectural Response to Coastal Humidity

Designing in Mangaluru requires an honest acknowledgment of the climate. With 4 to 5 months of monsoon and high humidity, we focused on materials and volumes that breathe. The 'Jodi Mane' (paired house) concept allowed us to maximize the footprint while creating a unified architectural expression that doesn't feel crowded.

### The Materiality of the Home

We prioritize vernacular materials because they perform better in local conditions. We utilized laterite stone, not just for its deep, earthy aesthetic, but for its thermal mass properties which help regulate indoor temperatures. Inside, blue Athangudi tiles were chosen to ground the modern living spaces, providing a distinct cultural link that feels classic yet fresh.

### Designing for Interaction

Architecture is about the 'built vs unbuilt' spaces. The staircase here is a prime example—it is not merely a utility, but a vibrant, suspended metallic sculpture that serves as the heart of the house. We designed it in a bright, bold blue to contrast against the white walls and natural wood textures, turning a functional element into a focal point that encourages social interaction between the ground and upper levels.

### Climatic & Functional Details

- **Fenestrations:** Large, carefully oriented openings facilitate cross-ventilation throughout the day.
- **Transitional Spaces:** The entrance verandah, or 'jagali', uses a glass roof with bamboo battens to combat humidity while casting intricate, shifting shadow patterns.
- **Sustainability:** Every project we undertake considers rain water management and passive cooling. This home integrates a central courtyard concept that draws hot air out, keeping the living areas comfortable even during peak summer days.
