A solid FPV setup starts at around 1.5 lakh INR, and trying to cut corners usually means losing money on crashed parts later. I prefer custom builds over off-the-shelf options because knowing how to fix your gear is just as important as knowing how to fly it. Whether you go with a custom build or the DJI Avata, you must be ready to get your hands dirty with tools. ### Building Your Rig Flying FPV is a mechanical skill as much as a creative one. You cannot be a pilot if you are not also a mechanic. When I started, I had no mentor, and I spent a lot of time and money on the wrong parts. Here is the core of what I recommend. #### The Custom Build vs. The Avata You have two paths. A custom FPV drone, built from scratch, gives you the ultimate freedom to repair and upgrade specific parts. The DJI Avata is more approachable for beginners who want to get in the air quickly without the initial soldering work. I personally use custom setups for my commercial shoots because I need that raw performance, but for someone just starting, the choice depends on your long-term commitment to learning the tech. #### Essential Gear for Cinematic Footage - **GoPro Hero 11:** This is my go-to. The 10-bit dynamic range and 8:7 aspect ratio give me massive flexibility in color grading. - **ND Filters:** If you want that buttery motion blur, you need ND filters. They are not optional if you want your footage to look professional. - **Enduro Batteries:** When flying in extreme locations like the Himalayas, standard batteries fail. I only trust the Enduro series. #### The Reality of Maintenance My desk is a mess of wires, spare props, and batteries for a reason. You will crash. You will break your drone. That is how you learn. Do not look at a broken quad as a failure; look at it as a field lesson in hardware configuration.
