# Planning a first birthday party in Bengaluru

You'll do this once. So we asked 27 people in Bengaluru who do this work what a first birthday really involves, from what gets added to a quote to the advance if the baby falls sick, and read the 95 requests families sent us. Here's what it costs for your guest list and what to settle first.

Prices are what each provider told us or published on their own price sheet, or a business's own published price. Sums are ours, worked out from those prices, so check every price when you book.

## Q1. How much does a first birthday party cost in Bengaluru, all in?

**Food is the biggest line, at ₹250 to ₹650 a guest for most party menus. For 60 guests, the food and its delivery, decor, a 2 kg cake and a photographer come to about ₹29,000 to ₹78,000. The venue, GST, return gifts and an entertainer are on top.** If the family cooks at home, a balloon kit bought online and a 2 kg cream cake cost about ₹2,100, plus the food.

Each line is a provider's own price or a Bengaluru business's published one, from 2025 and 2026. Not in it: the venue (question 2), return gifts and an entertainer (question 7), and GST where a provider charges it (question 9).

**Who can cook for your guest list**

- **Up to 25** (Party boxes from 10): **Three of the four caterers here start at 30 or 50, so order party boxes.** Diviskitchen sends boxes from 10, with mini bites from ₹35 each, and a vegetarian buffet from 15 guests at ₹300 to ₹550 a guest. Dropped off, there's no service charge. Hold it at home, or in a cafe's party room, which one venue guide puts at 15 to 25 people.
- **26 to 50** (Caterers from 30): **A caterer who starts at 30, or a buffet that starts at 15.** BookMyPartyFood serves from 30 guests at ₹350, ₹450 or ₹550 a plate, vegetarian (non-veg is about 20% more), plus ₹2,500 to deliver anywhere in Bengaluru, and the plate price goes up near 30. Diviskitchen's buffet works at this size. Bhandary's Kitchen sends food parcelled, with no staff, for 35 to 50 on weekdays, and adds a flat ₹5,000 below its 50-guest minimum. A community hall holds 20 to 50, one venue guide says; a clubhouse works if your association's room holds your list.
- **51 to 100** (Any caterer here): **All four caterers here start below this count. Ask who brings staff and tables.** Bhandary's Kitchen's kids' birthday menu is ₹350 a plate, vegetarian, plus ₹2,000 to deliver within 15 km of its Adugodi kitchen. BookMyPartyFood is ₹350 to ₹550, and Diviskitchen ₹300 to ₹550 plus ₹3,000 to ₹5,000 to serve. Smart Chef Catering is ₹550 to ₹900 a head, brings no tables or chairs, and charges about ₹1,000 a server, three or four for 50 guests. A banquet hall sells its own food instead, from about ₹599 a plate, vegetarian, plus GST, with the rent on top.
- **Over 100** (A hall's kitchen, or a team): **A banquet hall with its own kitchen, or a caterer with a team.** A hall's food starts at about ₹599 a plate, vegetarian, plus GST, with the rent on top. A banana-leaf lunch with thamboolam, which suits a homam on the same day, is ₹350 to ₹500 a leaf at a Bengaluru caterer's published rates. Bhandary's Kitchen, Smart Chef Catering and BookMyPartyFood all start well below this count; ask each how many servers a buffet this size needs.

**The cheapest way is at home.** Birthday balloon and banner kits start at about ₹169 online, and you put one up yourself. Add 2 kg of eggless cream cake at ₹1,900 from Cakes and Kremes by Enza, food the family cooks, and photos on a phone. That comes to about ₹2,100 plus the food.

**What families here plan to spend.** Of the 14 families who gave mytribe a budget for the whole party, the middle was about ₹67,500; of the 21 who gave one for the decor alone, about ₹10,000. Of about 40 who gave a head count, the middle was 50 to 60 guests.

## Q2. Where to hold a first birthday party: home, clubhouse, hall or restaurant?

**The place depends on how many guests you have. A cafe room holds 15 to 25, a clubhouse is often free or cheap for residents, and a banquet hall starts at about 50 and sells its own food, from ₹599 a plate plus GST, with rent on top.** Before you book anyone else, ask the venue about an outside caterer, the decorator's hours and the time you must be out.

The community hall, cafe and clubhouse figures are from one Bengaluru photo studio's venue guide (December 2025), which names no venue. The banquet hall figure is one hall's own published rate.

**Ask the venue first, in writing.** Three answers decide who else you can book: can we bring our own caterer and decorator, and is there a fee; what time can the decorator get in; and when do we have to be out. A clubhouse may also say no to tape or nails on its walls, and then the backdrop needs its own stand.

**What a banquet hall saves you.** A kitchen, parking, room for 50 or more, and no cleaning up at home. Its food is from ₹599 a plate plus GST, with the rent on top; a party caterer at home is ₹250 to ₹650 a guest. One hall here lets outside decorators and an outside cake in at no fee; ask yours.

**Outdoors, plan for rain.** From May to October it rains on 7 to 10 days a month here, mostly in the evening (question 4). A terrace or lawn party then needs a covered place to move to.

**Not in a public park.** [Cubbon Park's rules](https://www.thenewsminute.com/karnataka/cubbon-park-bengalurus-green-space-or-the-governments-playground) list birthdays and playing with balloons among banned acts, and Lalbagh's list of prohibitions includes birthday parties.

## Q3. Is a party planner worth it for a first birthday?

**Pay a planner when nobody in the family can spend the day on the phone. Food, a themed backdrop, one or two activities and a photographer for 50 to 60 guests come to about ₹34,500 to ₹85,500 booked one by one. A planner adds the coordination, seating, transport and often the design, so expect to pay more.** Party-cipate Party Planner's decor alone starts at ₹30,000, and Party Creatives says she charges 30 to 50% more than a mid-market decorator for her design.

**What the planner's money buys.** One team handles the caterer, the decorator, the cake and the timings, so you're with your baby and in the photos. Part of it is design: Party Creatives says she charges 30 to 50% more than a mid-market decorator for the same scope, with a design deck of 3D renders before you book. Ask a planner for a whole-day quote for your list and set it against the sum.

**For a small party at home.** A balloon setup, a 1 kg cake, an entertainer and a photographer come to about ₹13,500 to ₹19,000 booked one by one, before the food. Ask a planner what a party at home includes at their price, and compare it line by line.

**Not paying a planner?** Give one person in the family the list of who comes when, with their numbers, so the calls on the day go to them and not to you.

## Q4. What's the best time of day for a one-year-old's party, and how long should it run?

**Plan it round her nap and cut the cake early: a lunch after her morning nap, or an evening that ends by her bedtime. About three hours is plenty.** The decorator may need the room four hours before your first guest, so book the venue for that too.

- **Four hours before:** The decorator gets the room. Dream Decor asks for the venue at least four hours ahead, and a big build can start the night before.
- **An hour before:** Setup done and checked, so nobody is tying balloons when the first guests come.
- **Guests arrive:** The photographer starts. Cygnus Photography covers up to six hours, so one booking covers the whole party.
- **About an hour in:** Cut the cake while she's awake and happy. Don't wait for the last guest.
- **About three hours in:** Wrap up. A bouncy castle or a mascot is booked for three hours.

**Put the cake time on the invite.** Guests come late in the evening traffic, and a cake that waits for the last of them can slip past her bedtime.

**Loudspeakers go off at 10 pm.** A 2022 state circular bars loudspeakers and public address systems from 10 pm to 6 am, except in closed rooms such as community halls and banquet halls.

**November to February is wedding season.** Caterers and halls fill up, and Bhandary's Kitchen puts the peak-month rise at 15 to 20%, so fix the venue and the caterer first.

**Rain is one more reason to start early.** Storms build after 3 pm and peak around 7 to 8 pm, in an IMD Bengaluru study of thunderstorms at the airport from 2011 to 2023. Storms are most common in April, May, September and October, so in those months a morning event outdoors is the safer bet, and an evening one needs a covered Plan B.

## Q5. Why does one decorator quote ₹4,500 and another ₹38,000 for what looks like the same balloon backdrop?

**How much gets built, and who designs it.** About ₹2,500 to ₹8,000 buys an arch, a sign and loose balloons. ₹12,500 to ₹16,500 prints the theme and her name into the backdrop, and ₹22,000 to ₹28,000 is an 8x8 ft stage with 600 to 800 balloons. A design-led decorator says she charges 30 to 50% more for the same scope; by our estimate that puts the bigger stage at ₹28,600 to ₹42,000, where a ₹38,000 quote sits.

- **A balloon arch, a sign and loose balloons:** About ₹2,500 to ₹8,000. Zunaira Events from ₹2,500, Sri Sai Balaji Tents and Events from ₹5,000, Mahinava Events from ₹8,000. Nothing printed. **To compare two quotes, ask three things:** how many balloons, how big the backdrop is, and whether the printed panel with her name is in the price. The same "pastel balloon backdrop" can be 200 balloons or 1,000.

**What did the decorator mean?**

- **Flex backdrop:** **A printed sheet on a frame behind the setup.** It carries the theme, and on a first birthday often her name and age: Party Choice's themed setup prints both on a 6x3 ft arch or a 6 ft round frame. Ask whether her name and age are printed on it, and how big it is.
- **Organic garland:** **A loose cluster of balloons in mixed sizes, draped over the arch or the backdrop.** Party Choice's themed setup has about 200 to 250 balloons in one, his bigger banquet setup 600 to 800. Ask how many balloons are in it.
- **Plinth:** **A tall cylinder that stands in front of the backdrop.** It holds the cake or a prop. Party Choice's and Decor Your Dreams' themed setups each have three, wrapped in the theme. Ask how many there are, and whether they're wrapped in her theme.
- **Cutout:** **A figure printed on flat board.** Party Choice's themed setup has 3 to 4 sunboard cutouts, and his bigger one 4 to 6 life-size ones. At Sri Sai Balaji the included cutouts are flat, and a 3D statue is a separate rental. Ask how tall they are, and whether a 3D piece costs extra.
- **Marquee letters:** **Letters and numbers that stand on their own and light up.** Decor Your Dreams' ₹15,000 setup has a lit 1 and her name in lit letters; Party Choice's bigger setup has five lit letters for the name. Ask whether the lit 1 and her name are in the price.

**What the extra money buys at the top.** In the fairy setup the theme is printed onto the panels, the plinth wraps and the cutouts, and Decor Your Dreams says her kit carries other themes the same way. Party Creatives designs each piece for the party (a satin bow, a boombox, shelves of props), uses fresh flowers, and shows you 3D renders before you book. Both are complete setups.

**A homam and a party from one decorator.** Some decorators do a marigold look as well as balloons, so ask. Decorvise and TK Balloon Shades don't do traditional or pooja decor. ## Q6. Party photographer or cake smash shoot for a first birthday: which is worth it?

**If you can pay for only one, book a photographer for the party: ₹5,000 for up to six hours, with you and the family in the photos. A cake smash shoot is a separate session of the baby: most cost ₹3,000 to ₹15,000, and the biggest package here is ₹30,000.** A phone gets the moments too, but whoever holds it isn't in them.

**A shoot works round her nap too.** M3 Snap Studio split a five-theme shoot before a first birthday in two, three themes before a break and two after. In its reel, it says in Kannada:

**Get the delivery in writing.** How many edited photos, and by when: Baby's Backyard sends them within 10 days of your picks, Alluring Lens Studio 40 days after. One [district consumer commission](https://www.livelaw.in/amp/consumer-cases/photographer-held-liable-for-failing-to-deliver-photographs-and-videos-medak-district-commission-orders-refund-and-compensation-242594) ordered a photographer who never delivered a grandchild's first-birthday photos, video and album to refund ₹57,000 with 9% interest.

**Ask whether they'll post her photos.** Under section 17(b) of the Copyright Act, photos you pay for belong to you unless you agree otherwise, and studios' own terms vary, so say before you pay whether they may post them.

## Q7. What do we do for the other children at a first birthday: games, an entertainer, return gifts?

**One or two activities keep the older children busy: a magician, a mascot or a bouncy castle, about ₹4,000 to ₹6,000 each. Return gifts are bought one per child, so count the children, not the guests.**

## Q8. Are balloons and a smash cake safe for a one-year-old?

**Keep latex balloons out of her reach and pick up burst pieces at once: a children's hospital advises against them for children under 8, because a piece can block a small child's throat. Ask what gas is in any balloon that floats.** Order a small smash cake with no honey, no whole nuts, no fondant and nothing stuck in it.

- **Foil near her.** [St. Louis Children's Hospital](https://www.stlouischildrens.org/health-resources/pulse/why-are-latex-balloons-danger-children) says foil balloons can be a safer choice, and pieces of a burst latex balloon should be picked up at once. Ask the decorator to keep loose latex balloons off the floor where she crawls.
- **Floating balloons.** In December 2025 a balloon seller's cylinder blew up near Mysuru Palace and killed three people. [It was first reported as helium](https://www.newsonair.gov.in/mysuru-palace-helium-cylinder-blast-death-toll-rises-to-two-probe-ordered); police later said the cylinder held no helium, the district minister said the seller made the gas himself, and the state's home minister said small roadside sellers aren't regulated. VK Creative Events does no floating balloons at all, and air-filled balloons tied to the ceiling need no gas.
- **The smash cake.** [The NHS](https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/baby/weaning-and-feeding/foods-to-avoid-giving-babies-and-young-children/) says no honey until a baby is over one, and no whole nuts under five. Ask the baker for no fondant, no sugar pearls and no sticks or toppers left in it, the things photographers keep off a smash cake. Cakes and Kremes by Enza makes eggless cream cakes with no fondant, from ₹500 for 300 g, and most studios want you to bring the cake.

## Q9. What extra charges come on top of a first birthday party quote?

**Ask every quote to name GST, transport, setup time and staff. Expect 18% GST where a firm charges it, ₹1,000 to ₹2,500 for transport or delivery, and about ₹1,000 a server if the caterer staffs the buffet.**

**Telling them your budget is fine.** Some quote to it: Smart Chef Catering asks for your budget up front and builds the menu to it, and Party Choice writes every quote item by item. Either way, ask for each line, so you can see what to drop.

## Q10. Do we lose the advance if the baby falls sick before the party?

**Usually, if you cancel: advances run from ₹1,000 to three-quarters of the bill. If she's unwell that week, ask to move the date instead; several carry the advance over, free or for a small fee.**

## More questions

### How far ahead should we book for a first birthday?

Fix the venue first, since everyone else works to its hours; we found no venue that publishes how far ahead it fills. After that, most need only days. TK Balloon Shades can do a basic balloon setup in two to three hours if he's free, Party Choice wants two to three days, and Decor Your Dreams a week. A studio's weekend cake smash slot goes one to two weeks out at Casper Photography. A cream cake needs a day at Cakes and Kremes by Enza, and a tiered one four to five. From November to February, book the caterer early: it's wedding season, and Bhandary's Kitchen puts the peak-month rise at 15 to 20%.

### Ayush homam and the party: same day or separate?

Ask your priest for the day first. Many families go by her birth star or tithi, which can fall on a weekday. If it lands on a weekend, one day can work: the homam in the morning, a nap, the cake in the evening, in the same hall if it allows both. If it's a weekday, keep the homam small on the day and hold the party at the weekend; that's a second venue and a second meal. ### How many people is normal for a first birthday?

Families who wrote to mytribe with a head count planned for 50 to 60 in the middle, and anywhere from 7 to 350 or more. Twenty family for lunch is as much a first birthday as 150 in a hall. Food is charged per guest, so the number of guests changes the bill more than anything you pick.

### What does a first birthday cake cost?

Cakes and Kremes by Enza's eggless cream cakes are ₹500 for 300 g, ₹700 for half a kilo and ₹950 for a kilo, and a theme adds about 20 to 50%. A Bengaluru bakery publishes a 2 kg first-birthday theme cake at ₹4,190. Ask the baker how many it serves; we found no published figure.

### Can we bring our own cake and decor to a restaurant or hall?

Ask before you book. One Bengaluru banquet hall lets outside decorators and an outside cake in at no fee, and some restaurants charge a cake-cutting fee. We found no restaurant here that publishes its fee or a first-birthday price, so get both as numbers.

### Who takes the decor down after the party?

The decorator's team, and they take their props back: Dream Decor and Zunaira Events collect them after the event. Dream Decor and Party Creatives bill you for a damaged or missing piece. Put the takedown time in the booking to match the venue's out-by time.

- **Requests:** 95 Bengaluru first-birthday requests to mytribe, April to early September 2026. These are the requests that reached the point where we sent providers, so there were more requests than these. Budgets and head counts come from each family's own WhatsApp messages, never from a card we wrote or a range our assistant had just offered, and we took the middle of any range: 21 families typed a figure for the decor alone (middle about ₹10,000) and 14 for the whole party (middle about ₹67,500); about 40 gave a head count (middle 50 to 60, from 7 to 350 or more). Each request card is a family's own messages, put in our words.
- **Rain:** IMD's climatological normals for Bengaluru, 1991 to 2020, at the city observatory (a rainy day is 2.5 mm or more); Patil and Saheb of IMD Bengaluru, with Paparao and Nagaraja, in Current World Environment (2024), on thunderstorms at Bengaluru airport, 2011 to 2023.
- **Providers:** every price against a provider's name is one that provider gave mytribe on a call, in their own price sheet or quotation, or relayed through our curator. Dream Decor's and Party Choice's price lists are from 2025; the rest were given between 2025 and October 2026.
- **Our sums:** the sum for 60 guests in question 1 adds food at ₹250 to ₹650 a guest, ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 delivery or service, ₹5,000 to ₹16,500 decor, a 2 kg cake at ₹1,900 to ₹4,190 and a ₹5,000 to ₹13,000 photographer. "Booked one by one" in question 3, for 50 to 60 guests, adds food at ₹250 to ₹650 a guest, ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 delivery, a ₹12,500 to ₹16,500 themed backdrop, one activity at ₹2,500 to two at ₹6,000, and a ₹5,000 to ₹13,000 photographer. The small home party adds a ₹2,500 to ₹7,000 balloon setup, a ₹950 cake, a ₹5,000 to ₹6,000 entertainer and a ₹5,000 photographer. The design-led step in question 5 is ₹22,000 to ₹28,000 plus the 30 to 50% Party Creatives told our team she charges.
