I often use simple household items, like an old washed mask, to create effective liners for pots or ties for climbers. This keeps soil intact and retains moisture longer, reducing the need for daily watering. It is a small step, but it makes your garden self-reliant and significantly lowers your maintenance effort. ### Why Propagate? Propagating your own plants is the heart of a self-reliant garden. Instead of buying new pots from a nursery, you can create a cycle of growth right on your balcony. Whether you are using air potato tubers, mulberry cuttings, or collecting seeds from local flora like Babul, propagation keeps your garden evolving without adding to the plastic waste cycle. ### The Permaculture Approach In my practice, I apply Permaculture principles of Earth Care, People Care, and Fair Share. This means I do not just plant, I observe. If I am planting Rosella or Mexican Sunflower, I look at how they interact with the soil and neighboring plants. * **Seeds and Cuttings:** I maintain my own seed bank, saving seeds from passion fruit and gourds to ensure they are adapted to Mumbai’s climate. * **Resourcefulness:** My nursery setup often utilizes everyday items. A washing machine cover creates a micro-greenhouse for delicate seedlings, protecting them from harsh city heat. * **Soil Health:** I teach you how to create nutrient-dense soil mixes that retain water, so you are not dependent on synthetic fertilizers or constant watering schedules. ### Sustainable Gardening in Mumbai Mumbai’s climate can be tough on plants, with intense heat and high humidity. By propagating plants that are already acclimated to our environment, you get a higher success rate than buying delicate, imported varieties.
