In my classes, we don't just mimic steps; we break down the 'layakari' (rhythmic math) and 'tatkaar' (footwork) to ensure you understand the mechanics behind every spin. It is this balance of discipline and play that helps my students find their own rhythm, whether they join us in Vile Parle or online from anywhere in the world. Kathak is often misunderstood as just 'steps' or 'spins', but the true essence lies in the 'sadhana' (dedication) and the mathematics of the rhythm. As a practitioner of the Jaipur Gharana, my approach focuses on building a foundation that respects this lineage. When you look at the visuals in this cluster, you aren't just seeing performances or practice clips; you are seeing the 'layakari' (rhythmic play) that we dissect in every class. Whether you are attending my studio sessions in Vile Parle or joining from your living room via our interactive online batches, the method remains the same: we focus on body alignment, the precision of 'tatkaar' (footwork), and the storytelling aspect of 'abhinaya'. My students, ranging from six to sixty, often start with hesitation, but they find clarity through the repetition of 'bols' and the disciplined practice of 'riyaaz'. If you are curious about starting, do not worry about a background in dance. The first few months are designed to ground you in the basics—footwork, hand gestures, and spins—at a pace that allows you to absorb the rhythm. For those already in the journey, our workshops explore deeper compositions and the intricate 'padhant' (recitation) that brings the dance to life. Radhika Sathe, passed down to me.
