For example, during our recent Diwali and Onam activities, children didn't just watch us decorate, they hand-painted their own diyas and carefully arranged flower petals for the Pookalam. This hands-on involvement helps them feel a sense of ownership, making the cultural story feel personal rather than just a lesson from a textbook. Our approach to festivals is simple: culture is something you do, not something you memorize. Over our 11 years at Eka, we have observed that when children actively participate in the process of celebration, their understanding of values, community, and history deepens significantly. ### Why We Celebrate the Way We Do We treat every festival as a teaching moment. Whether it is Sankranti, where we cook harvest dishes on a traditional wood fire to connect with our agricultural roots, or Ganesh Chaturthi, where we collaborate with art spaces to craft eco-friendly idols, the goal is always experiential learning. We avoid the routine. Instead of just hanging decorations, we invite children to prepare the environment. This builds fine motor skills, patience, and a sense of responsibility. When they arrange a Golu display for Dussehra or learn the significance of the harvest during Pongal, they are practicing focus and aesthetic appreciation. ### Building a Community Festivals at Eka are also about bridging the gap between home and school. We frequently invite parents and grandparents to join us, turning these events into community gatherings. Seeing a parent join their child in the classroom to share a tradition creates a sense of security and belonging for the child.
