When I bring the Basti Crew, we are constantly reading the crowd to improvise live drum drops over my mixes. It means if the floor needs a little more push, we turn up the rhythm instantly—no pre-recorded tracks can match that kind of real-time sync. The core of my fusion set is the conversation between the console and the percussion. While a standard DJ set relies on the beat matching of the tracks, adding the Basti Crew introduces a layer of acoustic unpredictability. They aren't just playing over my music; they are accentuating the drops and building the tension during the buildup. ### The Setup We integrate dhol, djembe, and other percussive instruments directly into the mix. This requires specific technical coordination. Unlike a solo set, this performance needs a backline setup that allows the percussionists to move and interact with the crowd while staying perfectly synced to the tempo I am holding on the Pioneer CDJ 3000s. ### Why it works It transforms a standard wedding reception into an interactive show. Whether it is a sangeet night in Delhi or an after-party in Rishikesh, the presence of live drums encourages guests to dance harder. It feels organic. I often drop into Bollywood hits or heavy Punjabi tracks, and the Basti Crew reinforces the heavy bass with the rhythmic power of the dhol. ### Practical Details - **Coordination:** My team handles the monitoring and backline sync so the percussionists hear the music clearly through in-ear monitors, ensuring there is no lag. - **Customization:** We don't stick to one genre. We switch from high-energy commercial hits to raw, rhythmic beats, adapting the set based on how the crowd responds throughout the night. - **Logistics:** Because this is a live band setup, we require a dedicated soundcheck before your guests arrive to balance the electronic output with the acoustic volume of the drums. ## About Sidharth Talwar I have spent 28 years mastering the art of the crowd, but nothing hits quite like the roar of a live drum alongside a bass drop. Collaborating with the Basti Crew brings a raw, rhythmic pulse to my sets that makes the music feel alive. We don't just play tracks; we create a back-and-forth conversation between electronic beats and acoustic power.
