This is not merely an aesthetic choice, as it grounds the building in the specific geology of your site, ensuring the structure feels like a natural part of the topography rather than an alien addition to the landscape. When we approach a farmhouse project, the landscape is the foundation, not an afterthought. Our master planning process begins with a comprehensive site context analysis, evaluating sun paths, wind direction, and existing contour levels. By mapping the terrain first, we ensure that the layout, whether a U-shaped plan that wraps around a courtyard or a linear structure positioned to capture specific views, maximizes natural light and airflow. We lean heavily into vernacular materials. Using stone like rubble masonry for plinths or boundary walls allows the architecture to age gracefully alongside the forest or field it occupies. For projects in varied terrains, such as our work in Uttarakhand, we utilize raised plinths and deep verandas. These architectural responses are functional, as they manage sloping ground while providing shaded, habitable outdoor spaces that define our 'architecture that breathes' philosophy. Every farmhouse design package includes civil sections for pathways, drainage planning to mitigate water logging, and lighting layouts that integrate pathway bollards with ambient focus lights.
