I break down the anatomy of the instrument and explain the structure of a Raag, often demonstrating the difference between the meditative Alaap and the rhythmic Gat. We usually conclude with a Jugalbandi duet with a tabla player, which allows students to witness a musical conversation, helping them understand how two artists communicate through rhythm and timing in real time. Bringing Indian classical music to educational institutions requires more than just performance; it requires context. In my work with organizations like SPIC MACAY, I focus on bridging the gap between traditional heritage and young listeners. My lecture-demonstrations, such as those held at Ramagya School in Noida or St. Xavier's in Gurgaon, are interactive experiences where students are encouraged to ask questions about the instrument and the philosophy behind the music. ### Why Host a Lecture-Demonstration? These sessions are distinct from standard concerts. They serve as an introduction to our cultural roots. By explaining the mechanics of the sitar—how notes are bent to create the unique vocal-like quality—I help students listen with more intent. Whether for school assemblies or university cultural festivals, I adapt the repertoire to ensure it captures attention without losing its classical integrity. ### Practical Considerations - **Venue Setup:** I provide details on necessary acoustics and PA requirements suitable for auditoriums or large halls. - **Engagement:** I include brief, clear explanations of Teentaal (the 16-beat cycle) and other rhythmic structures to ensure the performance is educational. - **Flexibility:** I can perform solo recitals or bring a professional tabla accompanist for a complete Jugalbandi experience.
