I build custom rattan furniture using solid teakwood and authentic hand-weaving, creating pieces that stay tight, sturdy, and comfortable for years. ## Photos and videos - ![A beautiful round centre table with a dark wood frame and a natural cane weave top, protected by glass. That is a mistake. I insist on using seasoned Teak or Sal wood for the structure because if the frame moves, your cane will sag and snap within a year. In my workshop, I use a specific tensioning method for the weave so it stays tight even after years of humidity and daily use. Authentic rattan and cane work is about the tension. When you visit my workshop, you will see that I do not use staples or glue to hold the cane in place. I use traditional groove-and-wedge techniques on solid teakwood frames. This is why my chairs do not wobble and the cane does not unravel, even in Mumbai's heavy monsoon humidity. ### What Goes Into My Cane Furniture * **The Frame:** I only use chemically treated teakwood or sal wood. No particle board or soft plywood that rots when exposed to moisture. * **The Weave:** I work with natural rattan peel. It is hand-woven by experienced craftspeople, not machine-pressed sheets that look plasticky. * **The Finish:** I use high-quality melamine or PU polish. This seals the wood, preventing termites and protecting it from everyday wear. Whether you need a full dining set, a coffee table with a rattan top, or a lounge chair, I build it from scratch. You can bring me a sketch or a photo, and I will match the dimensions and the style to your exact space. If you want something that looks like the designs you see in magazines but is built to last for a decade, that is exactly what I do. ## About Design Point Furniture I'm Vijay Karande. Since 2010, I’ve been running my own workshop in Mumbai, and I have one simple rule: if I wouldn't put it in my own home, I won't sell it to you. I don't believe in cheap, fast furniture; I believe in wood that lasts and weaving that stays tight.
