I focus on subtle mic adjustments and dynamic shifts—playing softly during the Vilambit (slow tempo) sections to let the words land, and building intensity during the drut (fast) sections or the laggi. It is about knowing when to be a quiet foundation and when to enter the musical dialogue with the artist. Accompanying a vocalist is a sacred responsibility. It is not just about keeping time; it is about understanding the emotional landscape of the Khayal, Thumri, or devotional piece being performed. My approach is rooted in the Farukhabad Gharana, which emphasizes clear, crisp strokes that cut through the mix without being harsh. ### The Art of Conversation Great accompaniment is like a conversation. Whether it is a Sawal-Jawab (call-and-response) segment or a supportive Theka that holds the rhythm, I aim to react to the singer’s improvisations in real-time. I have been blessed to share the stage with brilliant artists like Shatavisha Mukherjee and Sounak Chattopadhyay da, which has taught me that the best music happens when the tabla and the melody become one. ### Technical Standards for Vocal Recitals I pay close attention to the technical side of the performance so the organizers don't have to worry: * **Balance:** I work with the sound team to ensure the Dayan (treble) and Bayan (bass) are mixed perfectly to support the vocalist's range. * **Adaptability:** Whether it is an intimate baithak with no amplification or a grand event at a venue like the India International Centre, I adjust my playing style to match the acoustics. * **Equipment:** I bring professional-grade instruments and ensure they are tuned on-site 45 to 60 minutes before we begin. If you are planning an event, I am happy to coordinate with your lead artists beforehand to align on cues and stage flow.
