I always recommend starting with a hard gel or acrylic base for these specific designs because they provide a smoother, more rigid surface, which makes that metallic shine pop and stay put. When it comes to chrome and cat eye, the devil is in the details. A lot of people do not realize that the magnetic effect in cat eye polish relies on iron filings in the gel. I use a handheld magnet to drag those particles into specific patterns before curing, which is why your nails get that deep, mesmerizing shimmer that moves with the light. For chrome, the secret is the application. It is not just rubbing powder over the nail. You need a perfect, non-tacky surface and a specific, flexible top coat. If you use a standard top coat, the chrome will peel or chip within days, and nobody wants that. I seal every chrome set with a specialized, snag-free top coat to keep that liquid metal look fresh for weeks. Since these styles are high-shine, they tend to highlight any shape imperfections. That is why I take extra time during the prep—the dry manicure, the cuticle cleaning, and the shaping—to make sure your nail bed is a blank canvas.
