From school yards to daycare floors, we paint to reclaim our public spaces and find our voice. ## Photos and videos - [Video: More scenes from the mural project at Cubbytales daycare. The truth is, I work with whatever canvas the community has—be it rough plaster in a village school or a daycare floor. My process is collaborative: I sketch the skeleton, but the heart—the color, the filling, the energy—comes from you, your team, or your children. We use high-quality exterior emulsions that last, but what really stays is the memory of the day we spent painting together. ### Why Public Art Matters Art should not be confined to galleries or high-end homes. When we paint on a public wall, we are reclaiming the space. We are saying that this neighborhood, this school, this office—it belongs to the people who inhabit it. ### My Process My mural projects are not about me handing you a finished piece of art. They are structured as a paint-along experience. I handle the professional setup: the priming, the safety checks, and the initial skeleton sketch that anchors the composition. You and your community—be it corporate teams looking for synergy, school children, or a local NGO collective—bring the energy. I have guided groups from PhD scholars to restaurant owners in Kochi, and even young nuns in Zanskar who ground local stones to make natural pigments. We focus on: * **Collaboration:** Everyone, regardless of skill level, holds a brush. * **Intent:** We paint themes that matter to the space—conservation, childhood joy, or social equity. * **Longevity:** I use professional exterior emulsions and protective varnishes, ensuring the work stands up to the Indian sun and monsoon. ### Is this right for you? If you are looking for a sterile, perfectly commercial mural, I might not be the right artist for you. My work is raw, personal, and inevitably leaves a smudge or two—usually on us. But if you want a wall that acts as a mirror for your values, a space that gets people talking, and a project that bonds your group, let's pick up the brushes. ## About Girija I am just a middle-aged woman who believes that truth is art. I travel across India, turning blank walls into shared stories, because I have seen how painting together can break down hierarchies and build real solidarity.
